NORTH COUNTRY HOMESCHOOLING

The North Country Homeschooling group seeks to provide homeschooling support and activities to those living in the Northern NY counties of Clinton, Essex, and Franklin. Activity information is available via email, blog, and Facebook. Homeschooling support is provided though Facebook and a variety of monthly support groups. The North Country Homeschooling Group is open to anyone who homeschools or who is thinking of homeschooling. There are no membership fees.

Homeschool Co-op Schedule for October 2014

Welcome back to a new year of co-op!  Classes will resume on 10/1/14.  Below you will find details for all the October classes -- 10/1, 10/15 & 10/29.  Please refer to the class write-ups for descriptions, fees, & RSVP.


Please come join us at the Wesleyan Church on Rt 3 in the village of Cadyville.

Set-up for those teaching will begin at 10:15am.  Also, teachers, please remember to bring an envelope marked with your class name, fee, and some change to place on the sign-in table!  

Classes start promptly at 11:00am, and conclude around 2:00p or 2:30p when the 1:00pm afternoon classes finish. Feel free to come for the whole time or just for the portion your family wants to participate in. Bring a lunch or participate in the community potluck! 10/1/14 -- Welcome Back!

11:00a - 12:00p
Super Science Experiment Day
Welcome back to another fun year of co-op!   Come join us for our annual first day of co-op Super Science Experiment Day. Families who are attending are encouraged to bring a science experiment to share! There will be lots of fun, educational experiments for kids of all ages from preschool through high school.  

Preschool thru elementary kids can come learn about leaf pigmentation, make elephant toothpaste, play with oobleck, experiment with  float/sink tanks, check out the animals at the petting zoo, try out some edible oddities, and lots of other great, hands on activities.

Middle/High school students will be meeting in a separate classroom to do a special, upper level, hands-on, science experiment class.

Potluck or bag lunch period. We will meet upstairs in the fellowship hall for lunch break.  Potluck lunch is open for everyone attending!  If your family has special dietary needs (vegan, gluten free, etc), please consider bringing a dish to share that you family can also eat!  Families who choose not to participate in potluck are encouraged to bring a bag lunch.

Children’s Chorus --
(grades PreK - 3)  Will be practicing Christmas songs this fall to be sung at Meadowbrook Nursing Home mid-December.   The only requirement for Children's Chorus is your young children must be able to participate without distracting the other kids!   Students interested in Children's Chorus will meet in the sanctuary upstairs.  At the first class, we will choose the songs to sing this fall.

Spies, Codes & Invisible Ink
How to send and receive information without your enemies finding it...from the American Revolution to WWII.

**Please note:  This is the first if 3 elementary history classes Jan McCormick will be running for the K-3rd grade kids this fall.   The topics will be: Spies, Codes & Invisible Ink, 11/5 - History of Weaving, 11/19 -History of Thanksgiving.  The class fee is $3 per class paid individually OR $6 for all 3 classes paid in advance today. **

Basics of Personal Finanace
This class will be an ongoing series over several classes.  Students will learn about various topics including: supply/demand; careers & income goals; budgeting & living expenses; using a checkbook; savings accounts; stocks, bonds & dividends; credit cards; your credit score & purchasing a home; insurance, taxes & retirement. This series of classes will meet: 10/15, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19 & 12/3.

Fee: $5 for the full semester or $1 per class
Extra Supplies:  Additionally, please bring a notebook, pencil, and if you have the classified & food ads from a newspaper or the Wall Street Journal.  If you will be bringing in newspapers please let the instructor know.

Making Music with Fractions
Music can make introduction to fractions fun for children.  Through humming, drumming, and playing out music notes on a recorder, students will learn about whole notes, half notes, quarter notes and eighth notes.  We will introduce the concept of basic fractions and how they are related to music.   Please note, this class will meet from 1-2pm on 10/15, 10/29, 11/19 & 12/3.

Fee:  If your child has a recorder, please have him or her bring it. If you need me to order one, please let me know by October 3rd .  There will be a $8 fee for recorders.  The class is free otherwise.

Handwork: Embroidery
Students will learn how to embroider their own initials on a patch.  Class will run 10/15 & 10/29.

Middle/High School:
Native Americans of New York State  -- The Early People
This class will meet for 5 sessions: 10/29, 11/5, 11/29, 12/3, & 1/7.   This class is open to students in 5th grade & up.  Through the class the students will have a better understanding of the day to day lives of the Native Americans of New York State from pre-contatct up to the American Revolution and their influence on the Colonial Constitution.

The five programs will cover: 
1) The Early People
2)Explorers/Contact
3)Trade Relations & Treaties
4)Wars - taking sides
5)The Aftermath

Note:Those interested in participating will be emailed a selection of readings a week before class, and students will pick one reading and write an abstract before class. (An abstract is an analysis of the reading - Did the author prove his thesis and support whether or not the author was successful and then conclude your belief. Reading and abstract expectations will be age and level appropriate. It will be an introduction to the 4th grades and a greater expectation for the older students.)

Classes will include artifact analysis, use of maps and primary documents to detect how the early people and the tribes that followed lived, their politics and relations with other tribes and Nations. There will be some role play. Students will break into groups or tribes to make political decisions on trade, treaties and war.

My goal for these lessons are to prepare students to think critically in their readings and writings. It will be an introduction for the younger ones and preparing the older students for college.I will provide the first readings, but will be open to students picking readings that apply to the lesson - but a topic they personally have an
interest in.

Halloween Party
Come celebrate Halloween at co-op!  Wear your favorite costume and join in the fun.  There will be apple bobbing, storytelling, crafts, and a variety of other Halloween themed activities for everyone to participate in.  Most Halloween activities will be left up for the early part of the afternoon so students taking the Human Body class can participate in the Halloween party once they’re finished.

Fee: FREE, but please bring a craft, project or other fun Halloween item to share

Human Body:  Skeletal System
Introduction to the human skeleton.  Learn some fun (and not so scary) facts about bones!
