Homeschool Camp

Homeschool Camp

There are two options for camping with the North Country Homeschoolers:

1) Family Style Camping at Ausable Point- one trip in June and one in Septemeber

Feel free to contact Amanda Bokus with any questions at bokusfamily@westelcom.com .

For those of you on Facebook there is also a Facebook group for North Country Homeschooling Campers where many of the camping families discuss which meals, who is bringing what gear, etc.  The group can be accessed by going to: Facebook Homeschool Camping Group

2) Homeschool Camp at Camp Cherokee

Homeschool Summer Camp at Camp Cherokee (Lake Saranac)
Aug.21st – Aug.26th, 2016
Homeschool Camp located on beautiful Saranac Lake, (at Camp Cherokee - 433 Gilpin Bay) will be Sunday, August 21st  through Friday, August 26th (morning).  This is my children’s favorite week of the year!

The cost is $464 per family (NOT person) and you supply a meal for everyone including the staff (plus, in the past everyone brought something to share for Sunday night’s pot luck dinner or we order pizza (everyone splits the cost); last year, we had enough families and Kari supplied Sunday’s meal.  In addition, your family will be a helper at another meal.  Depending on the number of families, I may ask everyone to contribute something towards a breakfast (box of cereal/drink) and help cleaning up for one extra meal.  In the past, people have been incredibly helpful so clean-up is pretty easy with all the hands at work. As the number of teenagers increase, I may ask them to help a little extra this year.

Additional notes:  If you’d like another adult with you for the week (Grandparent) it is an additional $120.  The cost of an additional child (13 and under) it is $100 for the week.  Foster children are considered family children and included in the family price.

Deposit - I am collecting a $100 deposit which is non-refundable to help the camp know the number of families that will be attending so they can determine the required staff.  You may mail me your deposit:

Note:  This year I will be giving our numbers in the beginning of May, so I'd love to know who is definitely planning on attending by then.  Thanks!

Activities (all included in the cost):

Pool with lifeguard
Horseback riding
Archery or Knife throwing
Ping Pong
Small Sand Pit (little boys liked it there!)
Vollyball/Sand area
Playground area
Motorboats with almost everything imaginable behind them (staff drives the boats)
Boat Area - includes kayaks, canoes, paddle boats (this is open all day but we need
an adult on land and everyone needs to sign the boats out)

We also have done the following in the past - mostly led by homeschoolers (staff
has participated in Talent night, etc)

~ "classes" taught by a parent (this has not been done in the last couple of years, but it's completely up to us – ideas in the past have included photography, cake decorating, drawing)

~ Roast Marshmallow, Fire, Chat time

~ Chapel time (my children love the songs)

~ Mom's homeschool sharing time -- bring your favorite idea, game, product, etc to share (we have not done this the last couple of years… but could if anyone wanted)

~ Talent night

~ Arts and Crafts – different families bring beads, drawing supplies, rainbow loom, etc. for the children to use in the evening or when it rains

~ Lots of games semi-organized games - volley ball, kickball, soccer and capture the flag were a hit in the past.  We also played quite a few board games especially when it rains.  I suggest you bring your favorite!

~ "Spooky" stories by the campfire for the older kids

Other things you may want to know --

The kitchen is vegetarian; hence no meat – milk, eggs & dairy are fine.
You bring your own bedding, towels, etc (beds and bunks are provide).  I’ll let you know what beds/bunks you will have in your room before you go.
Every family supplies a meal - so food is mostly covered.  You can put the food you bring in the main kitchen where there is a walk in fridge and area to store food. (You may also want to bring extra snacks for your family in a plastic container if you store where you sleep or you can store anything you want in the kitchen)  Due to allergies, we have only allowed peanut butter in the kitchen and asked that an adult makes the sandwich, then they watch the child while they eat it.  Afterwards, please wash everyone’s hands.

If you have other allergy concerns, or this policy is not acceptable, please notify me and we will work together to insure everyone is safe!

Feel free to contact me with questions.  You can email me at tamneureuther @

PS Please feel free to share with other homeschoolers!
