UPDATE on Homeschool Art Show

I wanted to send out a quick update regarding the Homeschool Art Show at the Peru Library.

The library has said that we CAN drop off art to the library. You can begin dropping off art anytime starting next week. I will be hanging it the end of June so I would like to shoot for a deadline of TUESDAY JUNE 27th. Once you drop off your art, please send me a quick email letting me know.  If you would rather meet up, I will still gladly meet you to pick up your art. Please RSVP if you wish to participate. Please note that my email has changed since last year. Thanks to those who have already RSVP'd and HUGE THANKS to those who have already given me art!!

Still loads of time to get your creativity on. Take advantage of the rain! :)  Any kind of art may be submitted. Multiple pieces may be submitted. No age requirements.

Thanks!

Hanging art NEEDS to be matted.  This can be homemade matting or you can purchase matting. It does not have to be anything fancy. Construction paper to cardstock to premade matting are all fine!

Art does NOT need to be framed

There are display cases available for non hanging items. In the past, we have displayed textiles, pottery, felted items, craft items, notecards etc...

All art needs to be tagged with name (or initals), age and location (city, town or county)

Everyone may submit multiple pieces. There is no age requirement.

(Removed info about dropping off).

There has been a closing reception the past couple of years. (Details to follow).  Art has to stay up until the closing reception.  If you are unable to attend the reception, I will remove your art after the reception and make arrangements to meet.

Adirondack Boreal Bird Training and Monitoring 2017

Thanks to a grant from Northern New York Audubon to Shingle Shanty and SUNY ESF, we are pleased to be able to offer up two boreal bird trainings this year as well as an opportunity on June 10th to do boreal bird surveys at various locations around the Adirondacks with experienced birders.

This project builds off of the work that began under an EPA funded project to detect wetland response to climate change in the Adirondacks (the final report from that project can be reached by the link at the bottom of the page).

These trainings are to be held on the following dates and locations:
  1. Saturday May 27th, 2017 1 - 4 pm at Paul Smith's College VIC,8023 State Route 30
    Paul Smiths, New York 12970
  2. Sunday June 4th, 2017 1 - 4 pm at Adirondack Interpretive Center, 5922 State Route 28N
    Newcomb, NY 12852
The training sessions are a general overview of the project, an introduction to birds in the Adirondacks, an overview of the field methods for the survey and field time with experienced birders.
If you are interested in attending the training in Paul Smiths on May 27th please RSVP to egaleotti@paulsmiths.edu
If you are interested in attending the training in Newcomb on June 4th please RSVP to aic@esf.edu

Once we get a feel for how many folks might be interested we will reach out with specific information on locations, times and leaders, for the June 10th boreal bird survey day.
Thanks for your continued interest in boreal birds and please share this email with anyone who might be interested!
All the best,
Steve Langdon

A Taste of Broadway in the North Country

I am writing to enthusiastically invite you and your students to a free performance of The Art of Living, an original musical comedy play, on the morning of Thursday Oct-5 at the Strand Center Theatre located in downtown Plattsburgh.  This invite was sent out to most schools in the area and already over half the seats of the Strand Center Theatre are booked.  Please act quickly.

Attached is a PDF invitation with details about the day that you can easily share with your teachers or parents.

As a lifelong teacher (and current art teacher at Rouses Point Elementary) I am thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to our community's students. In addition to getting to see a live performance of an original play, they will get to ask the cast and creative team about the process of bringing a show from concept to performance. They'll also get to see the recently renovated historic Strand Center Theatre in action!

Along with the PDF invitation, I have attached a flyer about the performance and a copy of the script. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like any additional information about the show by emailing my at info@dangallagherplaywright.com. I very much hope to see you at the theater!

Sincerely,
Dan Gallagher

February 6, 2017

Hello,

I am excited to share that my original musical comedy, The Art of Living, will be hosted by the Strand Center Theatre this October. As a lifelong educator, it was important to me that this also be an opportunity to provide a unique experience for students in the area. We will be presenting a free performance for school groups, where kids can learn about the creative process of a musical comedy and also experience a live show at the beautiful, historic Strand Center Theatre.

What: A free performance of The Art of Living, an original musical comedy play written by Dan Gallagher,

Plattsburgh native and Rouses Point Elementary School art teacher. After the performance, there will be a Q&A with the cast and creative team.

Who: This special performance is open to student groups and their teachers. The show is not recommended for children under the age of 10.

When: Thursday October 5th, 2017 at 10:15am. It is recommended that you arrive 45 minutes early.

Where: The Strand Center Theatre, 25 Brinkerhoff Street, Plattsburgh NY.

Notes: No food or drink is allowed in the theater. School busses can unload in front of the theater, but there is not parking on site. The Durkee Street parking lot is large enough to accommodate busses.

If you would like to attend, please confirm by email to info@dangallagherplaywright.com with the name of the school, a contact list of the teachers, and the total number of students and teachers who will be attending. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I hope to see you there!

Educator Development workshop series kicks off this summer

Creative Classrooms
BluSeed Studios offers
professional development
for teachers

BluSeed Studios  has launched the Creative Classrooms Project, a workshop series specifically designed to help secondary education teachers learn new skills and earn up to 20 hours of professional development credits.
These workshops are taking place this summer and fall and are appropriate for teachers of all disciplines and artistic abilities, with the option to do them over one or two days. The retreat-style program provides in-depth exploration of a particular artistic technique or practice, as well as dedicated time for peer review, discussion and critique. In addition, working in small groups led by professional artists and educators from regional Universities and Colleges, participants can identify new ways to enrich their classrooms.
The instruction takes place in a non-institutional setting at BluSeed Studios, enabling participants to relax and reboot their teaching practices, says BluSeed Artistic Director Carol Marie Vossler.
“The workshop objectives are threefold: To learn new creative processes that correlate with STEAM core standards, share classroom values and strategies with the other attendees as well as ‘take a deep breath’ and experience the beautiful Adirondack setting,” she said.
Creative Classroom workshops are eligible for Continuing Teacher & Leader Education (CTLE) certification credits through a partnership with the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA). Funding for this program was provided by a grant through the New York State Council on the Arts.
