For grades 4-8: Using the genre of an essay or a journal entry, assume the role of someone living during the War or 1812.

Historical Context:

In September of 1814, the largest invasion in our nation’s history took place. It started when Sir George Prevost crossed the Canadian border into the town of Champlain, NY, with several thousand British troops and would end when the United States forces won the Battle of Plattsburgh on September 11, 1814.

Task:

Discuss how a young person living at the time might have reacted to the events of the day. You can also assume the role of a young person living in the Champlain Valley or with the British invasion force and write as though you yourself were living through it. Your essay needs to show evidence of some historical research. Some suggested topics and ideas:

  • Drummer boy in the American militia
  • Member of Aiken’s volunteers
  • Daughter or son of a family living in Plattsburgh or a surrounding village
  • Powder monkey for the British Navy
  • Wife, mother, or daughter marching with the army

Classical ballet is a living tradition, a physical art encompassing an appreciation of art, a visual awareness of line, symmetry as well  as the French language in the terminology of ballet.  Ballet promotes agility, coordination, strength, grace and an elegant posture a dancer retains throughout their life.

Classical ballet has a logical code of positions, movements and specific exercises fine tuned for over three hundred years to enable the dancer to extend one's limbs, to leap into the air, to balance, to turn to float carried by the music  to excel.

About Victoria's Dance & Teaching Experience:
As a teacher and dancer my greatest influence would be that of the pre-revolutionary Russian Classical Ballet.I had the great privilege to study extensively with such great masters as Igor Schwetzoff,
Nicholas Orloff, Nina Stroganova, Vladimir Doukodovsky and George Chaffee. I was Kaleria Fedicheva's last protege.   As a teenager I had wonderful contemporary ballet teachers Melissa Hayden, David Howard, Helgi Tommasson, Finis Yung, Patricia Wilde, Sonia Petrova, Wilhelm Burman and Maya Pyleitskaya. While in high school I was on scholarship in the special program at Les Grandes Ballets and later studied at Joffery and American Ballet Theater.

Ballet is a great tapestry of tradition, history, music, choreography, the dancer's physical athletic technique, mental interpretation intertwined with the spiritual deposition of each dancer.

I believe in  technique without tears. If a child may be likened to a flower one does not bloom under stress, negativity or tension.

Within the realm of classical ballet I hope to respect our different natures, to leave space for individual growth and precious self expression, to free one's soul through the dance.

Play at the Strand Theatre

HARRIET
TELLS IT LIKE IT IS

A Live Performance for 4th to 6th Graders—FREE for Students and Teachers
This School Program will be presented in a timely fashion on February 4 at 10:15 AM to usher in Black History month and integrate arts education with a live theatrical experience.

The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts has invited Capital Repertory from Proctors Theatre in Schenectady to The Strand to present a production of “Harriet Tells It Like It Is” by Karen Jones Meadows to elementary school children from our tri-county area.

Students will travel back in time and with Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad in this special adaptation. Harriet shares her story of bravery, struggle and triumph as she fights for her freedom and the freedom of countless other African slaves. This narrative demonstrates the power one individual has to affect and change the lives of so many.

The Capital Repertory Theatre shares the works of brilliant playwrights and some of the nation’s most acclaimed stage actors to help deepen and broaden students’ understanding of dramatic literature and theatrical tradition. Following the performance students may engage in a post-performance discussion with the actors and the creative team.

The Strand is pleased to open its doors to elementary school children to be educated and entertained in this historic and restored theatre space.

Please call the NCCCA at 518-563-1604 to reserve space for your students today.

Downhill Skis For Sale

Downhill skis for sale.  Size 150cm.  They are a shaped (curved tips/newer type)  Rossignol junior ski that say “Fun girl” on them.  They have Marker M450 bindings.  They are in good shape.  I’m selling them because someone at the Titus ski swap sold them to me only for me to find out when I tried to fit the bindings to my boots that I’m over the weight limit for the bindings.  The bindings I believe have an upper weight rating of 125lbs.   Could probably put new/used bindings on them if needed but I ended up just buying a diff. used pair.  I paid $50 and would like to sell them for $50 since I didn’t even use them.  It seems like a good price from what I’ve seen at Play It Again sports (they might sell for more there).  I can send you a photo of them with a detailed photo of the numbers on the end of the ski that indicate the radius, etc.  contact Jen Smith at smithjen @ charter.net (no spaces)
