New York State Summer School of the Arts

New York State Summer School of the Arts
A program of the New York State Education Department
Dear Parent,
NYSSSA is excited to announce NYSSSA 2014. A program of the NYS Education Department, NYSSSA offers intensive, pre-professional summer training programs that are exciting, challenging and fun. This program is open to all NYS students currently in grade 8-12. Advanced applicants currently in grades 6 and 7 may audition for the School of Ballet only.

Celebrating its 45th Anniversary this summer, NYSSSA is comprised of 7 Schools (Ballet, Dance, Theatre, Orchestral Studies, Choral Studies, Media Arts and Visual Arts). Each school is a 4 week residential program where students have the chance to work with internationally acclaimed artists, professors and artistic companies including members of the New York City Ballet and the nPhiladelphia Orchestra. All of our teaching artists have a strong desire to work with youth to help them achieve their highest potential. Students engage in world-class training, education and inspiration that could change their lives forever. A strong sense of community and support is developed between faculty, staff and other students from across the State. We encourage you to visit our website at www.oce.nysed.gov/nysssa for more details about our program. Our schools are cosponsored by NYS School Music Association (NYSSMA), NYS Art Teachers Association (NYSATA), NYS Media Art Teachers Association (NYSMATA) and the\ Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Admission to NYSSSA is through an audition or portfolio review process. All students are encouraged to apply- it is free and is a great opportunity to connect with our amazing artists! Audition and portfolio review details for each school are available on our website and begin in January 2014.

Tuition for the 4 week program is $2100 and includes room, board, classes, performances and most activities. Tuition assistance is available for students demonstrating economic need.
Students reside on one of our beautiful host campuses including Skidmore College, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Delhi and SUNY Oswego. A full residential life program is provided in addition to the artistic program. A full time residential life counseling staff lives with the students and ensures the health, safety and well being of each student. Our counselors are educators, artists and advance degree candidates in each program’s designated art. This provides the student with a nurturing and supportive environment, as well as an immersion in their art that is unique to NYSSSA.

Please reach out to the NYSSSA Office with any questions you may have about the program.
