Homeschool Day at Fort Ticonderoga

Homeschool Day at Fort Ticonderoga

Friday, September 9, 2016

Homeschool groups are invited to join us for a day exclusively reserved for you! Spend a day at Fort Ticonderoga and take part in a series of programs designed for homeschool families. While interacting with British soldiers, students can ask about the life at the 18th-century fort.
During the day, students can learn about the British troops who helped defend Fort Ticonderoga in the fall of 1777. Interacting with these British soldiers, students can ask about the life of an 18th-century soldier. What did he eat? Where did he sleep? What did he wear? Where did his clothes come from?
Students can explore the Fort and museum exhibitions. They can take guided tours, learn about the Fort’s history, and observe musket demonstrations. They can visit the historic trades shop, where shoes and clothing are produced by the Fort’s staff, and learn about the global economy of the 1770s.
To register your homeschool students, please email our Group Tour Coordinator at Fort Ticonderoga, atinfo@fort-ticonderoga.org
I wanted to thank Ft. Ticonderoga for Homeschool Day. My kids & I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing a day at the fort. The demonstrations were wonderful, and we enjoyed learning about the history of the fort & the area. The guide explaining the geography of the area & lakes helped us to understand why the fort was so strategically desired. --2015 Homeschool Day Participant
By the way, the day was AMAZING!!! No joke, it was absolutely everything we hoped for and more. We all want to come back! Thank you to everyone who put so much effort, planning, enthusiasm, and time into a perfect way to start the homeschooling year!!! --2015 Homeschool Day Participant
All of you at Fort Ticonderoga should be high-fiving each other!  Your homeschool day was incredible!  My family and I have traveled all over the Northeast and Midwest attending homeschool events at historical landmarks, national parks, national lakeshore, etc, and yours was one of the best!  We had an amazing time enjoying your majestic fort in it's beautiful surroundings on Lake Champlain.  The interpreters were informative and interesting.  Every staff member and volunteer was friendly and helpful. Thank you for this special event geared towards the homeschooling family.  We've been telling everyone how great Fort Ticonderoga is!  We'll definitely be back!--2015 Homeschool Day Participant

Secrets of Benjamin Franklin’s Kite at Miner Museum

The Alice T. Miner Museum announces:
Secrets of Benjamin Franklin’s Kite
Friday, July 22, 7:00 p.m.

Chazy, New York – We’re all familiar with the story of Benjamin Franklin’s discovery of electricity by flying a kite in a lightning storm. But what really happened on that day in 1752? Join us at the Alice T. Miner Museum on July 22 to find out! Jan McCormick will demonstrate a replica of Ben’s kite and explain how it was made. Could he have really flown it, and did he actually perform his famous experiment? Where did the myths about Franklin and electricity come from?

This program will explore science and history through hands-on activities and is free and open to children of all ages. Refreshments will be served, and visitors will also have the opportunity to play some historic games of Ben Franklin’s time.

The Alice T. Miner Museum is located in Chazy, New York. This fifteen-room Colonial Revival museum houses Alice T. Miner’s collection of furniture, ceramics, glass, samplers, silhouettes, quilts, dolls, and more, most from the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum also displays artifacts related to Alice and William Miner’s life and philanthropic work in the North Country.

Wild Child Summer Programs 2016

Happy Summer Everyone!

Here's the Wild Child Program dates for 2016. Thanks for your patience in waiting for them. There was a chance of construction happening on the property but that has been postponed, and Wild Child will be happening. Matt and Sara Cook, the property owners, are expecting their first child in July and are thrilled to welcome your children to explore their magical property. They love having the kids there making memories, forts, and trails!

There are 3 sessions available this year in August. The first session is reserved for some of my family members and close friends, many of whom are traveling distances to participate. It is full right now, but if it is the only week your child could come to Wild Child let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Please feel free to pass this on to other families you think may be interested.
Thank you and enjoy this beautiful weekend,
 Christina

Homeschool Camp

Homeschool Summer Camp at Camp Cherokee (Lake Saranac)
Aug.21st – Aug.26th, 2016
Finally, I have this year’s details… Homeschool Camp located on beautiful Saranac Lake, (at Camp Cherokee - 433 Gilpin Bay) will be Sunday, August 21st  through Friday, August 26th (morning).  This is my children’s favorite week of the year!

The cost is $464 per family (NOT person) and you supply a meal for everyone including the staff (plus, in the past everyone brought something to share for Sunday night’s pot luck dinner or we order pizza (everyone splits the cost); last year, we had enough families and Kari supplied Sunday’s meal.  In addition, your family will be a helper at another meal.  Depending on the number of families, I may ask everyone to contribute something towards a breakfast (box of cereal/drink) and help cleaning up for one extra meal.  In the past, people have been incredibly helpful so clean-up is pretty easy with all the hands at work. As the number of teenagers increase, I may ask them to help a little extra this year.

Additional notes:  If you’d like another adult with you for the week (Grandparent) it is an additional $120.  The cost of an additional child (13 and under) it is $100 for the week.  Foster children are considered family children and included in the family price.

Deposit - I am collecting a $100 deposit which is non-refundable to help the camp know the number of families that will be attending so they can determine the required staff.  You may mail me your deposit:     Tammy Neureuther
11 Carriagehouse Lane
West Chazy, NY 12992

Note:  This year I will be giving our numbers in the beginning of May, so I'd love to know who is definitely planning on attending by then.  Thanks!

Activities (all included in the cost):

Pool with lifeguard
Horseback riding
Archery or Knife throwing
Ping Pong
Small Sand Pit (little boys liked it there!)
Vollyball/Sand area
Playground area
Motorboats with almost everything imaginable behind them (staff drives the boats)
Boat Area - includes kayaks, canoes, paddle boats (this is open all day but we need
an adult on land and everyone needs to sign the boats out)

We also have done the following in the past - mostly led by homeschoolers (staff
has participated in Talent night, etc)

~ "classes" taught by a parent (this has not been done in the last couple of years, but it's completely up to us – ideas in the past have included photography, cake decorating, drawing)

~ Roast Marshmallow, Fire, Chat time

~ Chapel time (my children love the songs)

~ Mom's homeschool sharing time -- bring your favorite idea, game, product, etc to share (we have not done this the last couple of years… but could if anyone wanted)

~ Talent night

~ Arts and Crafts – different families bring beads, drawing supplies, rainbow loom, etc. for the children to use in the evening or when it rains

~ Lots of games semi-organized games - volley ball, kickball, soccer and capture the flag were a hit in the past.  We also played quite a few board games especially when it rains.  I suggest you bring your favorite!

~ "Spooky" stories by the campfire for the older kids

Other things you may want to know --

The kitchen is vegetarian; hence no meat – milk, eggs & dairy are fine.
You bring your own bedding, towels, etc (beds and bunks are provide).  I’ll let you know what beds/bunks you will have in your room before you go.
Every family supplies a meal - so food is mostly covered.  You can put the food you bring in the main kitchen where there is a walk in fridge and area to store food. (You may also want to bring extra snacks for your family in a plastic container if you store where you sleep or you can store anything you want in the kitchen)  Due to allergies, we have only allowed peanut butter in the kitchen and asked that an adult makes the sandwich, then they watch the child while they eat it.  Afterwards, please wash everyone’s hands.

If you have other allergy concerns, or this policy is not acceptable, please notify me and we will work together to insure everyone is safe!

Feel free to contact me with questions.  You can email me at tamneureuther @
yahoo.com or call me at (h)518-563-7036 or (c) 518-569-3327.  My kids are looking forward to an amazing time with their friends and I’m looking forward to the peace and friendship I enjoy each year.

PS Please feel free to share with other homeschoolers!
