Pike’s Cantonment Day at the War of 1812 Museum

Plattsburgh-The War of 1812 Museum operated by the Battle of Plattsburgh Association will have a day full of events dedicated to raising awareness about Pike’s Cantonment, the historic War of 1812 military camp lead by Zebulon Pike.

In the Winter of 1812, under the leadership of Colonel Zebulon Pike, units of the U.S. Army took up winter quarters and for three months lived near what is now Route #22 in the vicinity of the Plattsburgh International Airport. During these three months, over 200 men perished due to frost bite and severe cold before marching out in early 1813.

Pike’s Cantonment Day will commence at 10:00am on Saturday, December 13th at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association at 31 Washington Road, on the former old base behind the airplanes on Route #9.

Events are as follows…

10:00am: The Battle of Plattsburgh Association (BOPA) will have a flag raising ceremony celebrating the newest addition to the BOPA grounds, a 30 foot flag pole donated by Woodmen of the World and installed by Andrew Rivera and members of the Boy Scouts of America. Installation of the pole was a requirement for the completion of Andrew Rivera’s Eagle Scout project.

11:00am: War of 1812 Soldier demonstrations will be held by local War of 1812 military re-enactors. Soldiers will talk about what life was like as a soldier during the War of 1812 and will be firing off a re-enactor canon and holding musket demonstrations.

12:00pm: Several re-enactors will then go next door to the Old Post cemetery and participate in the annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony held by the American Military Retirees Association (ARMA).

1:00pm: War of 1812 re-enactor boot camp for kids will be held on the BOPA grounds.

2:00pm: Presentation by Keith Herkalo, President of the Battle of Plattsburgh Association and author of “The Battles of Plattsburgh: September 11, 1814” on the history of Pike’s Cantonment.

3:00pm: Brief ending ceremony presented by re-enactors.
