July 17 Dino Hunter Safari

DINO-HUNTER SAFARI is loaded with magic, bubble-play, outlandish sound effects, eccentric props and enough fun to inspire curiosity and delight the most academic fuddy-duddy.

Do you love Dinosaurs? Professor Livingpebble does too! Slither, fly or stomp on down and join this nutty professor on a Dino-Safari. Kids will get in touch with their inner T-Rex and embody reptiles big and small, carnivore or herbivore, while enjoying comic antics that are anything but fossilized!

July 24 The Puppet People: The Last Dragon

Are all princesses helpless? Are all knights brave and strong? Are all dragons evil?

Find out in this whimsical retelling of the fairy tale by E. Nesbitt. Explore the issues of stereotypes, discrimination, self-esteem, greed, and friendship with this vivid puppet production. This show features classical music, large rod puppets, mouth puppets, a 7 ft dragon and a life-size knight on horseback for a jousting scene your audience will never forget!

July 31 The Amazing Max

An awesome and hilarious live magic show!" - PBS Kids

What’s truly amazing, as magician Max Darwin works miracles during the show, is not only what happens on stage but also what happens in the audience. The enchanted look that spreads across the faces of his young (and not-so-young) fans is hands down astounding.  Max conjures a custom experience that young ones will carry with them long after the show ends. 

Aug 7 Bubble Trouble: Explode with laughter from Jeff Boyer's Bubble Trouble, an interactive bubble stage show for all ages.

Bubble Trouble – A bubble volcano. Bubble roller coaster. A kid in a bubble? Jeff Boyer takes bubbles to the max in this one man bubble extravaganza. It's the craziest, most creative bubble show around. Jeff juggles bubbles, sculpts and builds with bubbles, makes fogfilled bubbles and more. 5th Annual Homeschool Art Show

The Peru Library has once again invited the homeschool community to display their art. We have a tentative showing set for the month of August. I will be sending out other emails with specific dates and details but I wanted to get the word out now. 

All homeschoolers are invited to participate. All mediums included. Multiple pieces may be submitted. Stay tuned for more information! 

Reminder: Homeschool Art Show and Science Fair

The annual Homeschool Art Show and Science Fair is coming up next Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 1-4pm in the basement of the Saranac Lake Free Library.

The Art Show is already up and on display in the room, and at the end of the day on the 28th, we will take it down and you can bring it home.

If you haven't yet, please RSVP for the Science Fair so we can plan for space and other needs you might have (access to electrical outlet, access to the sink, etc.)

Both the Art Show and Science Fair are non-competitive, fun, all-ages events. Even parents are allowed to do projects and display them! If your student doesn't want to do a science fair project and would rather just come and observe, that is totally fine. 

Feel free to bring a healthy snack to share.

We'll start setting up science projects at 12pm, and by 1pm we'll be ready to share with each other and any family, friends, or community members who come by.

Homeschool Camp Cherokee!

Dates: August 18th – 23th, 2019. (Sunday, August 18th (dinner time) through Friday, August 23 (morning)

Location: Camp Cherokee (Lake Saranac: 433 Gilpin Bay)

Cost: For the week will be $493/family (not person) plus a meal for everyone including staff and being a helper at an additional meal.  

          Note: If you are interested in bringing another adult with you for the week (Grandparent), it is an additional $134 and for a child, it is $115.  Foster children are considered family children and included in the price.

 This is my children’s favorite week of the year!

Extra details:

Sunday night’s pot luck dinner or we order pizza (everyone splits the cost); three years ago, we had enough families and Kari supplied Sunday’s meal. In addition, your family will be a helper at another meal. Depending on the number of families, I may ask everyone to contribute something towards a breakfast (box of cereal or gallon of milk) and help cleaning up for one extra meal. In the past, people have been incredibly helpful so clean-up is pretty easy with all the hands at work. As the number of teenagers increases, I will be asking them to help a little extra this year!

Activities (all included in the cost):

Ø  Pool with lifeguard

Ø  Horseback riding

Ø  Archery or Knife throwing

Ø  Ping Pong

Ø  Field – great for baseball, soccer, capture the flag, etc.

Ø  Small Sand Pit (little boys liked it there!)

Ø  Volleyball/Sand area

Ø  Playground area

Ø  Motorboats with almost everything imaginable behind them (staff drives the boats)

Ø  Pontoon boat – love the rides to star watch at night

Ø  Boat Area - includes kayaks, canoes, paddle boats (this is open all day but we need an adult on land and everyone needs to sign the boats out)

Ø  Chapel time

Other things you may want to know --

·         The kitchen is vegetarian; hence no meat – milk, eggs & dairy are fine.

·         You bring your own bedding, towels, etc. (beds and bunks are provide). I’ll let you know what beds/bunks you will have in your room before you go.

·         Every family supplies a meal - so food is mostly covered. You can put the food you bring in the main kitchen where there is a walk-in fridge and area to store food. (You may also want to bring extra snacks for your family in a plastic container if you store where you sleep or you can store anything you want in the kitchen – please label for food if you do not want anyone else using it)

·         Due to allergies, we have only allowed peanut butter in the kitchen and asked that an adult makes the sandwich, then they watch the child while they eat it. Afterward, please wash everyone’s hands. If you have other allergy concerns, or this policy is not acceptable, please notify me and we will work together to ensure everyone is safe!

·         You may want to bring stuff for s’mores – they are a hit on nights we have a campfire!

·         Bring your favorite board game - kids love to play games together on rainy days or in the evening.

·         If you would like to organize a “class” or “meeting”, just let me know and we will add it to our schedule. In the past we have had photography, cake decorating, men prayer time, and homeschool sharing time to give you an idea.

Homeschoolers' Day at the Almanzo Wilder Farm

We’re inviting homeschool families to come for a tour on May 22nd. We're offering two tour times ~ 10-12 and 12:30-2:30. Openings are limited- please pre-register by May 20, so we can plan for tour guides. School tour rates apply for all who pre-register (students, $3.50; adults, $7). PRESS RELEASE.....FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The PLATTSBURGH STATE GOSPEL CHOIR, FERMATA NOWHERE from Stafford Middle School, as well as the Inaugural ADIRONDACK HIGH SCHOOL GOSPEL HONORS FESTIVAL CHOIR will all take the stage for GOSPELFEST 2019 on SATURDAY, APRIL 27th from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus in Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall, 55 Beekman Street, Plattsburgh, New York. 

The concert features 60 High School students from across the Adirondacks who will come together for two days to learn and perform a concert of gospel music. The AHSGHFC will perform 8 compositions/orchestral arrangements all supported by a professional Adirondack Chamber Orchestra under the artistic leadership of Jennifer Moore of the Willsboro Central School district. The concert will feature A Cappella, Concert Spirituals, Contemporary Gospel, Traditional Gospel, and Inspirational Ballads. Stan Spottswood of Silver Spring, Maryland is the invited clinician for the festival. Stan a professional songwriter, composer, arranger and jazz pianist has directed numerous choral music festivals in the US and abroad. As a composer and director, his works have been performed at the Gospel Music Workshop of America, the Ithaca High School Gospel Festival, Carnegie Hall and with the National Symphony Orchestra of the Czech Republic.
The six Adirondack high schools that are participating are AuSable Valley, Crown Point, Keene Valley, Peru, Saranac, Willsboro as well as Ithaca College High School Gospel Choir Festival Alumni. The program host will be nominated Composer and Pianist, Dr. Adrian Carr of ACMastering.

There is still time for Adirondack high school choral singers, schools and Ithaca College High School Gospel Choir Festival Alumni to register and participate in the 2-day clinic and concert. Please contact Jennifer Moore (jmoore@willsborocsd.org) no later than April 15th if interested. This unique festival promises to provide both students and high school chorus teachers with the history, evolution, and impact of gospel music on the human experience. Students will take away from this clinic an enhanced level of sophistication about gospel music styles and will be taught the colors and blends of gospel music and its musical expressions using elements of phrasing, timbre, dynamics, emotions, tempo, and instrumentation.

Homeschool Ski Program at Titus

It's getting to be that time of year again!  I have received the homeschool skiing forms from Titus Mountain in Malone. This program is for ages 5 and up.  It will last 5 weeks on Friday's 9:30am-4pm starting January 18th and ending February 15th, one make-up will be scheduled for Friday 3/1.  Our passes are not valid during school February vacation, that’s why the make-up is scheduled for Friday 3/1.  Titus will provide 1 hour of lessons each week for each skier (adult or child) of any level with the cost of the lift ticket.

This year pricing is as follows:

Lift, Lesson, & Rentals** $165 (student)/ $315 (adult)

Lift & Lesson  $110 (student)/ $185 (adult)

Lesson & Ski Lesson Rental** $110 (student)/$185 (adult)- This is for season pass holders

Lesson Only $55 (both student & adult)- This is for season pass holders 

**Rentals included boots & skis (or snowboard) but not helmets

Titus asked me to remind parents of proper attire: layers, hat/helmet, mittens/gloves and no jeans. Jeans tend to soak in water making a skier/snowboarder cold and wet

NEW THIS YEAR! TEACHER WORKSHOP OCTOBER 12^TH

This year Fort Ticonderoga is hosting a free National History Day Workshop for Teachers on Friday, October 12^th. The workshop runs from 9:00 to 3:00 and features sessions introducing History Day to new teachers, how to integrate History Day into your curriculum, an introduction to this year’s theme, and a session on locating local and regional primary sources for your students. This year’s North Country History Day Contest takes place on Saturday, March 2, 2019. Registration for all entries will be due by February 8, 2019. The registration fee remains at $10 per student, which will be due with submitted registrations. Registration will be online beginning shortly after New Year’s Day.

Saranac Lake Homeschool Art Class

I hope everyone had a good summer.  I am trying to schedule Art for Monday mornings at 10.  I would like to have those interested to please sign up with the 1st name and ages of all children so I can finish making plans and ordering supplies.  I will need to have a count by Thursday so I can get my order in on Friday. 

So far I am planning some perspective drawing and painting projects.

I would like to add I am trying to schedule Art from 10 to 11 am on Mondays starting September the 24th.   There will be no class on October 8th, November 12th and the week of Thanksgiving.

Homeschool History Day

History Day is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, 2018! 

We will meet in the morning at 9:30am at Historic Saranac Lake's Laboratory Museum for kids' presentations, which will start at 10am. Then, we will all share a potluck lunch together at noon. In the afternoon, we will caravan over to the Bela Bartok Cabin to learn about this famous historical musical visitor. We will most likely be done at 2:30-3:00pm. Here's what you need to do to participate:

1. Please RSVP by October 16 so that we have a complete head count.

2. Kids are NOT required to prepare a presentation (because being in the audience is an important role too!), but if they would like to choose a historical person, place, or thing to dress up as and present about for about 5 minutes, it really is a fun way to practice no-pressure public speaking! 

I have gone up with my kids to act as their interviewer to prompt them for facts about what they researched. One year, my older son was being interviewed and my younger son just stood there next to him dressed up as the historical person's sidekick. (Hee hee hee. Oh memories!) The point is, anything goes, and there is no pressure. Just fun and pride in getting to share cool information with other homeschoolers.

3. If you are able, please bring a small treasure to put into each child's goody bag that they get at the end of the day. In the past, people have brought things like pencils, stickers, apples, etc.

4. Please bring a dish to pass. Please let us know if your kids have any allergies we should be aware of.

"Not Back To School" Picnic

Pride & Prejudice School Day Matinee at LPCA 10/3/2018

The October 3^rd Pendragon Theatre performance of Sense & Sensibility has been changed to Pride & Prejudice. This performance is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel by Kate Hamill. Kate Hamill is well known for her fresh and funny adaptations of Ms. Austen's work.  According to the New York Times, "Hamill…has a gift for condensing three-volume novels into galloping two-act plays. Her screwball Pride and Prejudice hasn’t met a rib it can’t tickle.” Highly theatrical, with actors playing multiple roles, this adaptation captures both the spirit and sparkle of the novel. Original music composed for this production by New York City based musician Ellen Mandel adds another layer of dramatic flare and features actor Evan Raines playing violin live during the performance with the rest of the cast providing various other soundscapes to underscore the action.

This production is recommended for grades 6-12, the cost is $3 per student, and the show begins at 10:00. As with the rest of our school day matinee series, reservations are on a first come, first serve basis and seating is limited.
