Each year the Cornell Cooperative Extension offers field days for 6th graders. This is an opportunity to learn about environmental awareness issues and topics. Agricultural and wildlife topics are also included. The event is held during school hours. Students in sixth grader can attend on either 9/17/13 or 9/18/13.

The North Country Homeschooling group seeks to provide homeschooling support and activities to those living in the Northern NY counties of Clinton, Essex, and Franklin. Activity information is available via email, blog, and Facebook. Homeschooling support is provided though Facebook and a variety of monthly support groups. The North Country Homeschooling Group is open to anyone who homeschools or who is thinking of homeschooling. There are no membership fees.

BOOK IT! runs every school year from October through March. The teacher sets a reading goal for each child in the class. A tracking chart and reproducibles are included to make it that much easier. As soon as a child meets the monthly reading goal, the teacher gives him or her a Reading Award Certificate.
BOOK IT! goals are based on reading ability. Number of books, number of pages, or number of minutes – they all work. BOOK IT! can also be used with the reading curriculum or as support for comprehension or intervention programs. For children not reading independently, the goal can be set where a parent or others read to the child.

Considering Starting a Martial Arts Class--Looking for interest
Master Wolf and his wife are the former owners of a Martial Arts School in NYC. They have retired and are making their home in the North Country. They are currently teaching Marital Arts at the ROTA Gallery. They are willing to have a homeschool martial arts class at if there is interest.The cost would be reasonable.

Some Parents Cry "Foul"—Should Homeschoolers Be Allowed to Participate in Public School Sports?
Since homeschooling families pay taxes, why do some states prohibit homeschoolers from participating in public school sports? Currently, states are split on this issue. Just recently, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Indiana have changed their rules to allow homeschooler participation, while Virginia has declined to allow it. In reference to homeschooled athlete Tim Tebow, state legislation encouraging participation is often called a “Tebow Bill.” Tebow attended the University of Florida on a football scholarship and went on to win the Heisman Trophy while playing football for the Gators.Within the realm of homeschooling, homeschool families are even split on this issue as well. On the one hand, some families would argue that that barring homeschoolers from play means that they would be denied scholarships that are available to other high school athletes. On the other hand, some families have not even considered allowing their children to enter the public school system for any reason because doing so would detract from the lessons that are being taught at home.
Whatever position you hold, as the parent, you should have the right to decide which course is best for your child.
At the Center for Homeschool Liberty, we receive calls from parents in non-inclusive states who wish to legally challenge this discrimination against their child. As this has been litigated over the past decade, homeschool parents have lost. State courts have held that the state retains the right to include or exclude homeschoolers from the public education sports programs. In other words, there is no “right” to play sports at the public school, so the state can outright forbid it, remain neutral, or highly regulate it. In states that include homeschoolers, some have mandated substantial requirements, such as minimum class registration or academically related participation eligibility requirements.
What can you do if you have a gifted athlete but reside in a non-inclusive state?
- Organize a movement of parents to petition your state legislature to sponsor a Tebow Bill.
- Find private or local leagues that invite the participation of all students.
- If your state laws are silent on the issue, it means that participation is at the discretion of your local school or school district. Make an appointment with the local athletic director and work with your child to present a compelling case to allow participation.
Homeschooling, and the regulation thereof, remains a state issue.
Family Camping Trips
Two family camping trips are planned this year for Ausable Point Campground. Families who went last fall has a great time!
Mostly tent campers with a few RV's. No hook-ups on sites, but sites are RV ready. Bathroom building right in the row where we are all booked. Spigots for fresh water. Canoes & kayaks will be available for everyone to share, and can be put in right from our campsites.
Day passes are available for families wanting to visit but not spend the night. Please be aware if you day visit you will need to park in the day use area & walk down to the camping sites as the park has strict rules about no visitors vehicles on campsites.
Each family brings their own drinks & snacks. Most meals are eaten family style/buffet.
Bring your outdoor toys, bikes, scooters, and makings for s'mores!

History Out of The Box Jr. Docent Program

Become a
history detective and discover clues to digging into the past. As a
Jr. Docent you will have hands-on experience learning what it was
like living in the past. You will find out how to use a flint stone
and striker to make fire, find clues buried in old documents, (Think
National Treasure!), discover how young people survived 200 years ago
without an xbox or wii!
Jr. Docents
will meet at the Kent Delord House Museum, as well as Clinton County
Historical Association, and dig into the history and collections that
few get to see. Eventually you will participate in tours, events and
programs. We will meet your needs: If you love to play historic
games, you will get to demonstrate those. If don’t enjoy working
with the public, you can assist in research or developing activities
for children that visit the museums.
Museum
educator, Jan McCormick, will meet once a month with those interested
in participating. (Ages 6 and up welcome) If you miss one week-no
worries, the information can be emailed to you. The
one item you will need is a three ring binder for your hand-outs.
Families can share if that is more convenient.
The Jr.

Homeschool Camping Trips for 2013: Save the Date!
It's time to think about making reservations for the 2013 homeschool camping trips. Reservations open Jan 1st for the Ausable Point State Park. In order to guarantee we can book a large block of the popular beach front sites near each other we need to book early. Three camping times are being organized:
SIGN UP NOW FOR THE Ausable Point Campground dates--the spots are filling up quickly.
1) Early summer camping trip at Ausable Point campground, June 15-19 (+ or - extra days if wanted, weekend days included so the whole family can come). This is tent or camper camping. We are looking to book sites between numbers 33 - 46. There will be kayaks available for families to use. 2) Family camp at Camp Cherokee in Saranac Lake, Aug 18-23 (anticipated dates, more info to follow mid winter). This is a typical summer camp experience: staff, boating, pool, horseback riding, cabins, archery, dining hall with shared meal prep, and lots and lots of fun!
