One Day Accapella Workshop

The Champlain Valley Chorus of Sweet Adelines is sponsoring a one day workshop on October 5, 2019. Sweet Expectations is a chance for girls to sing a cappella in the barbershop style. This year's guest director is the director from the Saratoga Soundtrack Chorus, Jenn Hunter. 

A $10 registration is required ASAP, due to t-shirt orders and a chance to work on the music ahead of time. Information can be obtained from Diane Sabourin at 518.569.6188 or sabourdm@gmail.com.

Adirondack Youth Orchestra (AYOA)

The Fall  2019 Season for the AYOA will get underway on Sunday September 15th. The rehearsals and concerts will again be held at the Peru High School.  For information on the groups and rehearsal times, please  check out the AYOA website (www.ayoa.org) for all the details. 

After last season’s successful Father’s Day concert in the park , we hope to provide more performance opportunities for our student musicians this upcoming year.  Help spread the word to local businesses in need of  small or large ensembles for special events!  

We also have some exciting new enrichment opportunities for our string musicians this season.  More information will be provided on opening day.  

 

Cumberland12 has donated ten sets of movie passes to the AYOA.  We would like to use them to help in recruiting new members to the group.  If you or your child knows someone that is interested in joining us for the spring please feel free to invite them to a rehearsal.  Have them put your child’s name on the bottom of the attached registration form and we will send you a pair of movie passes.

The PLATTSBURGH STATE GOSPEL CHOIR, FERMATA NOWHERE from Stafford Middle School, as well as the Inaugural ADIRONDACK HIGH SCHOOL GOSPEL HONORS FESTIVAL CHOIR will all take the stage for GOSPELFEST 2019 on SATURDAY, APRIL 27th from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus in Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall, 55 Beekman Street, Plattsburgh, New York. 

The concert features 60 High School students from across the Adirondacks who will come together for two days to learn and perform a concert of gospel music. The AHSGHFC will perform 8 compositions/orchestral arrangements all supported by a professional Adirondack Chamber Orchestra under the artistic leadership of Jennifer Moore of the Willsboro Central School district. The concert will feature A Cappella, Concert Spirituals, Contemporary Gospel, Traditional Gospel, and Inspirational Ballads. Stan Spottswood of Silver Spring, Maryland is the invited clinician for the festival. Stan a professional songwriter, composer, arranger and jazz pianist has directed numerous choral music festivals in the US and abroad. As a composer and director, his works have been performed at the Gospel Music Workshop of America, the Ithaca High School Gospel Festival, Carnegie Hall and with the National Symphony Orchestra of the Czech Republic.
The six Adirondack high schools that are participating are AuSable Valley, Crown Point, Keene Valley, Peru, Saranac, Willsboro as well as Ithaca College High School Gospel Choir Festival Alumni. The program host will be nominated Composer and Pianist, Dr. Adrian Carr of ACMastering.

There is still time for Adirondack high school choral singers, schools and Ithaca College High School Gospel Choir Festival Alumni to register and participate in the 2-day clinic and concert. This unique festival promises to provide both students and high school chorus teachers with the history, evolution, and impact of gospel music on the human experience. Students will take away from this clinic an enhanced level of sophistication about gospel music styles and will be taught the colors and blends of gospel music and its musical expressions using elements of phrasing, timbre, dynamics, emotions, tempo, and instrumentation.

Spring 2018 Dalcroze Music Education in the North Country

Hi! My name is Sora Shpack. My sons and I moved to Plattsburgh a few years ago. I’m a flutist and
composer, and was a music teacher and performed as well. Similar to many of you, I was also a home
school mother for many years, home schooling my six children. During that time a number of families in our community and myself began a group home school program, we called “Round the Block School” and I was the music teacher for our group. Presently I’m in the process of training for a Dalcroze Music Education Certification, a type of musical education that is an experiential way of knowing music through the body. At the end of this letter I’ve included some information explaining in more detail about Dalcroze Education.

My proposal to the home school community in the North Country is an exchange in that I cannot at this time take money since I am not certified and yet, since I need some experience, I am excited to work with your children. Because I have a bachelor and two master degrees in music and have taught for over thirty years, I feel that while I will be exploring with Dalcroze, I’ll be able to keep your children’s music education both on track and going forward in a great way.

Possibilities for Dalcroze Education in the North Country

Length of Class: one hour
Frequency: Once a week
Ages: 4 years to 18 years. No children under 4 years. There is an excellent program for babies and
toddlers in town called Music Together.
Class size: Anywhere from 10 to 1 in a class, although 1 is not as much fun as being with other friends.
Grouping for classes: grouped by age with the smaller age span being the best for learning.
The ideal is one class each of children aged 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-18.
A simpler option is one class each of: 4-7, 8-12, 13-18.
A still simpler version is one class each of: 4-8 and 9-18

For an exchange of my time and preparations for your children I’m hoping you can provide the
following:
1. A room for class – at least 15’ x 15’ preferably with a piano, or second choice a piano
keyboard.
2. In many Dalcroze classes teachers use props. It is possible to teach without them, but
they are a lot of fun for the kids. I have Scarves, Chop Sticks, and a Floor Staff. If you
have and are willing to share with the class any of the following: Balls (larger for
younger children; smaller for older youth), Dowels, Bean Bags, Rhythm Sticks, Hoops,
Shakers, Ribbons, Streamers, Paper and Crayons, Drums, Tambourines
3. As part of my studies and certification, I need to video the classes for my own
learning. It will be necessary for you to sign a waiver stating that you agreed to this. I
will not need to identify your child by name for the video, but I will need your
permission. Once my mentor and I have discussed the teaching moments, I’ll delete the
video entirely.
4. Finally, I live in Plattsburgh so hopefully there is a space in Plattsburgh or someone
who travels out, can provide transportation for me or the cost of gas.

Insurance is another issue. Years ago, we didn’t worry about that. Hopefully this won’t be an issue, but I’m interested in your thoughts and ideas.

For those interested in trying out a Dalcroze Music Education, it would be great to set a date, time and place to meet you. I can give you more explanations and show some videos if you are interested or we can just go over the logistics and get the program going.

What is Dalcroze Education?

Dalcroze is an experiential way of knowing music through the body where the body is literally the
instrument of learning.
Dalcroze classes are musically comprehensive, integrating movement with
• solfège
• vocal, piano and rhythm instrument improvisation
• music theory
• music composition
• music appreciation

Dalcroze education is a process-oriented method governed by nice principles that distinguish it from
other educational methods:
• Music as stimulator, motivator and regulator in the classroom
• Movement as the means for learning – the body is the instrument
• Listening is an active experience
• Relationships of time, space and energy are a means for learning music concepts
• Learning is discovery-based (experiential)
• Experience occurs before analysis
• Imagination, improvisation and invention engage students in the processes
• The spirit of play (joy) runs throughout the method
• Social interaction works with music as a communicative and collaborative art

Dalcroze movement, called Eurhythmics, enables the entire body to express many layers of musical
information at one time. Dalcroze trains the body to attain supple and fluid independence – at the same moment, the feet can perform one idea, the hands and arms another and the voice yet another. When musical and physical skills are strengthened at the same time, navigating an instrument becomes much easier, communication in chamber music becomes more effective and orchestral ensemble skills improve dramatically.

Adirondack Youth Orchestra Association Fall Season

As the new school year approaches we are getting ready for the Fall Season.  Opening day for all five groups will be September 10^th.  However, if your son/daughter was in the AYO or AYV last year, you will be receiving an additional email regarding a jump start on their season.

 

The registration fees are remaining the same again this year.  The AYO fee for the combined Fall and Spring Season is $100 and the fee for all the other groups is $60.  As in the past, if you submit your registration by August 25^ththere will be a $10 early registration discount.  Additional discounts are available for multi-group participation and for having multiple children participating.  A copy of the registration form is attached.

 

Also attached please find a business advertising form for our concert programs.  The fees from this advertising are one of our sources of revenue that help us keep the registration fees low.  If you are able to contact any local businesses that may be interested in advertising in our program it would be a great benefit to the kids and the organization.   

Here is the current schedule for the Fall Season.

-For the AYO and AYV only – Three day “boot camp” on 8/27, 8/28 and 8/29. 

        The AYV will meet on all three days from 6pm – 7pm in the Plattsburgh High School Orchestra Room.

        The AYO will meet on all three days from 6pm – 8pm in the Plattsburgh High School Bank Room.

 

-Opening Day for all groups – 9/10.

        3:30pm -  Check in and registration at the Plattsburgh High School Auditorium.

        4:00pm – Parent meeting In the Auditorium.

        4:00pm – Student meeting in the Band Room (all groups).

Immediately following the student meeting, the band room will be used for audition warm-ups while the auditions (for those who have not submitted NYSMMA forms with their registrations) are taking place in the conference room (instrumental) and orchestra room (vocal). 

5:00pm – Rehearsals begin.

        AYO will be in the band room (7:00pm dismissal);

        AYM will be on the stage (6:00pm dismissal);

        AYS room TBA (6:00pm dismissal);

        AYV will be in the orchestra room (6:00pm dismissal);

        AYC room TBA (6:00pm dismissal).

 

-Regular Rehearsal Schedule (any changes during the year will be communicated by the conductors):

        AYO will meet from 5:00pm – 7:00pm;

        AYM will meet from 6:00pm – 7:00pm;

        AYS will meet from 5:00pm – 6:00pm;

        AYV will meet from 3:30pm – 4:30pm;

        AYC will meet from 4:30pm – 5:30pm.

 

-Rehearsal Dates:

        9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29 and 11/5.

 

-Dress Rehearsal (all groups may not need a dress rehearsal):

        11/11

 

-The Fall Concert will be held at the Plattsburgh High School Auditorium on 11/12 at 2:00pm.

Engaging and energetic, the riotous solo circus show is the story of a concert pianist whose quest to perform the recital of his life becomes a total catastrophe. The hapless pianist juggles, shuffles and stumbles from one incident to the next in a hilarious and unforgettable performance for kids and adults alike.

At the peak of high society entertainment sits The Pianist‘s pianist. Impeccable in every aspect he glides graciously through life never placing a foot out of step. He is, in a word: perfection. Or at least… that’s what he thinks.

The Pianist is a solo comic contemporary circus piece by Thomas Monckton (Moving Stationery) and Circo Aereo (Finland). The show is centered on, in, under, and around one of the most magnificent of all musical instruments, the grand piano. Accompanying this elegant apparatus is the poised pianist himself. Only he is so focused on impressing everyone that before he realizes it, his show has transformed from the highbrow concert he hoped for into the spectacularly amusing catastrophe that is The Pianist. To salvage his somewhat unsalvageable dignity the pianist draws on his imagination and comes up with some rib-tickling and absurd results.

The Pianist mixes classical clowning with contemporary circus to produce a charming piece of comedy about the lure of luxury.

Adirondack Youth Orchestra

Hello Parents,

As summer starts to wind down we are preparing for the upcoming fall season of the Adirondack Youth Orchestra Association.  Attached please find the registration form for this year.  We have kept the pricing the same as last year.  The deadline for the $10 discount for early submission is September 2^nd.  You can either mail the forms in to the AYOA at PO Box 1590, Plattsburgh, NY 12901 or you can drop them off at my office at 61 Smithfield Blvd, Plattsburgh (an after hour drop slot is available).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THIS YEAR:

FIRST REHEARSAL:

The first rehearsal will be on September 11^th and is being held at the Plattsburgh Senior High School in the area of the Auditorium.  For the first rehearsal only we ask that a parent stay for the parent meeting.  Here is the schedule…

        3:30-4:00  Registration (for those that haven’t taken advantage of the early registration) and Check-In: held in the lobby and auditorium.

        4:00-4:30  Parent meeting for all groups: held in the auditorium.

                    Student meeting for all groups: held in the band room.

        4:30-5:00 Audition warm-up area will be in the band room.

                    Optional light snack for the students (water and cookies) will be in the auditorium.

                     Chorus auditions* will be held in the orchestra room (all students, even those that have submitted NYSSMA forms are asked to audition)

                     Instrument auditions* will be held in the conference room (optional but recommended for those that have submitted NYSSMA forms)

                *The conductors use the auditions to assist them with group/seat placement.  Your child should have a short selection ready for the audition.

        5:00 Rehearsals start

                AYO will be in the band room with a 7:00 dismissal

                AYM will be on the stage in the auditorium with a 6:00 dismissal

                AYS will be in a room to be determined with a 6:00 dismissal

                AYC will be in a room to be determined with a 6:00 dismissal

                AYV will be in the orchestra room with a 6:00 dismissal

REGULAR REHEARSAL SCHEDULE:

The current scheduled rehearsal dates for this session are-9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6 and an 11/12 dress rehearsal.  The schedule may be adjusted by the conductor of each group.  If any changes are necessary the conductor will communicate them.  This information should also be available on our web-site, www.ayoa.org.  The rehearsals are all being held at the Plattsburgh Senior High School.

The rehearsal times are:

AYC & AYM  3:30-4:30

AYV 4:30-5:30

AYS 5:00-6:00

AYO 5:00-7:00

CONCERT:

The concert is being held at the Plattsburgh High School Auditorium at 2pm on Sunday, November 13^th.

OTHER INFORMATION

We are pleased to welcome a number of new conductors to the AYOA this year.  Our AYO conductor and music director, Todd Pray, has requested a one year leave of absence and will be replaced by Patrick Towey.  Our AYM conductor, Kate Bulluck, has moved back to her home area in the capital district to teach and will be replaced by Joel Perkins.  Emily Allen is returning as the AYS conductor.  David and Megan Yonteff, our AYW and AYV conductors have stepped down.  The AYW is being merged into the AYM and our AYC conductor, Cherie LaDuke, will be moving from the AYC to the the AYV.  Jennifer Moore will be joining us to conduct the AYC. 

I still have photos orders for a dozen folks.  If you ordered pictures at the spring concert and haven’t picked them up yet they are available at my office (State Farm Insurance, 61 Smithfield Blvd) Monday – Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Also, we are very interested in having more parents join us on the board.  It is always best to have the parents perspective represented.  If you are interested in joining the board and/or if you are able to assist us at the opening rehearsal please let us know.
