Pocomcrady Education Activities and the Crux Climbing on Fridays

The Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center has added on a morning activity on each day that we are meeting at The Crux. Each family should feel free to participate as often as they wish. You can do one afternoon, or one morning, or one full day or you can do every single opportunity or combination. There is no requirement. There is no minimum to how much your family attends. Please just come if and when you are able. Also note that there is an $8 fee, per person for each morning session and a $7 fee per climber for the afternoon sessions. **

Outdoor Education Center morning activities will begin promptly at 10:00am with doors opening at 9:30am. Morning programming runs until noon. Lunch will run from noon to 1:00pm. Lunch is provided. They will take a headcount in the morning and their chef will prepare something for the group. Cost for the morning session and lunch is $8 per person.

Ski swaps and homeschool XC ski days on the horizon

Once winter comes, we will be having weekly homeschool XC Ski days at Mt Van Hoevenberg (MVH) in Lake Placid on Wednesdays from 10am-1pm. MVH hasn't made the sign up form yet on their website, but the plan is to have it cost $50/child for the season, which would include lessons and a pass to allow the child to participate in other community programs too. We're not sure if that price includes rentals yet. Parents who ski with the group should also be able to get a discounted $50 pass, though the details on that are also a bit hazy. BUT, we wanted to share this info now because a whole bunch of ski swaps are coming up in the region, in case you were in the market for equipment. Here are some of them:

Workshop with Puppetry Group at LPCA

Pendragon Theatre in Saranac Lake: Homeschooler Discount for "Athena" and Children's Auditions Announcement

We would like to offer the homeschoolers a deal of $5 per student/ $10 adults to attend ATHENA on ANY of the remaining dates.  If you all can organize a time to come as a group that is not Sunday (with a "talk back" anyway) we can have a pre-show talk with the cast and director.  That way, the students can know what to look for during the show (such as parallels with Athena of Greek Mythology, for example).   Folks can come as individuals, too. They just need to tell Kent they are homeschoolers when purchasing tickets.  Remaining shows are:  October 18, 19, 25, 26 @ 7:30 PM and October 20, 27 @ 2 PM.

PRESS RELEASE:  AUDITIONS FOR MR. TOAD'S CHRISTMAS CAROL OCT. 13 & 14

This brand new adaptation of the holiday favorite finds theatrical impresario, Mr.Toad, of Wind in the Willows fame, producing and directing his version of Dickens’ tale. In spite of a bumpy final dress rehearsal, a cast-wide cold and last minute cast replacements, the show goes on when quick thinking children rise to the occasion to produce a Christmas Carol that is uniquely faithful to the original story.
There are roles for as many as 20 actors and all parts, from Scrooge to Tiny Tim, will be cast with actors between the ages of five through eighteen.
Auditions will be held at the theatre on October 13 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. and October 14 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin the first week of November.
Performances are slated for December 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27 and 28.

Annual Homeschool History Day

Our Annual Homeschool History Day is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22, 2019! 

RSVP with the number of kids you are bringing by email to Sunita at sunitahalasz@gmail.com.

The cost is $5 per family, which gives you admission for the day to the Historic Saranac Lake Laboratory Museum and also serves as a donation to our hosts at the museum who will also be our guides for our afternoon activities.

Morning activities will take place in the John Black Room (basement) of the museum. In addition to the upstairs part of the museum (the laboratory), there is a display called "The Art of the Cure" in the John Black Room, so be sure to take time to look at it!

Please arrive at 9:30am to put your potluck food in the fridge and give your treasure to the treasure bag fillers. The museum has a full kitchen.

Kids' presentations will start at 10am. Then, we will all share a potluck lunch together around noon.

In the afternoon, we will caravan over to the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake to learn about and honor some of fascinating people buried there who influenced local and also world history. We will most likely be done at 2-2:30pm. Here's what you need to do to participate:

1. Please RSVP by October 15, at the latest, so that we have a complete head count for participants to use for treasure contributions.

2. Kids are NOT required to prepare a presentation (because being in the audience is an important role too!), but if they would like to choose a historical person, place, or thing to dress up as and present about for about 5 minutes, it really is a fun way to practice no-pressure public speaking! Parents can feel free to stand up with their kids while they present and help prompt them or act as their interviewer to help them remember the facts they researched.

3. If you are able, please bring a small treasure to put into each child's goody bag that they will get at the end of the day. In the past, people have brought things like pencils, stickers, apples, etc.

4. Please bring a dish to pass. Please let us know if your kids have any allergies we should be aware of.

Adirondack Youth Orchestra (AYOA)

The Fall  2019 Season for the AYOA will get underway on Sunday September 15th. The rehearsals and concerts will again be held at the Peru High School.  For information on the groups and rehearsal times, please  check out the AYOA website (www.ayoa.org) for all the details. 

After last season’s successful Father’s Day concert in the park , we hope to provide more performance opportunities for our student musicians this upcoming year.  Help spread the word to local businesses in need of  small or large ensembles for special events!  

We also have some exciting new enrichment opportunities for our string musicians this season.  More information will be provided on opening day.  

 

Cumberland12 has donated ten sets of movie passes to the AYOA.  We would like to use them to help in recruiting new members to the group.  If you or your child knows someone that is interested in joining us for the spring please feel free to invite them to a rehearsal.  Have them put your child’s name on the bottom of the attached registration form and we will send you a pair of movie passes.

Fort Ticonderoga Homeschool Day

Spend a day at Fort Ticonderoga and take part in a series of programs designed for homeschool families! While interacting with soldiers, students can ask about life at the 18th-century fort. Step aboard the 1920s replica tour boat, Carillon, for a 75-minute narrated boat tour on Lake Champlain to gain an in-depth waterway experience. Raise your hand in allegiance and enlist in the Continental Army during the immersive “To Act as One United Body” program and practice formation tactics, drills, and marches. Explore a new 2019 design in the six-acre Heroic Maze and answer clues connected to Fort Ticonderoga’s history as you find your way through the maze.

Pre-registration is not necessary. To purchase Carillon Boat Tickets and To Act as One United Body tickets, visit the booth located near the Log House Welcome Center upon arrival to Homeschool Day.

Fairy Home Competition and Tour

Join community members, youth groups, and families in constructing a home to be placed on exhibit
on the trails of Sellars Forest, Burke NY. These homes are to be constructing from organic materials,
please no store bought items. Twigs, stones, pinecones, pebbles, tree stumps, acorns, etc . Homes can
be held together with glues, twine, wire, small nails & screws. These homes may range in sizes of 4 inches to 4ft. They are constructed from the comfort of your home and brought to Sellars Park, Sellars RD Burke NY. They will be placed in age divisions and entered into the contest according to age divisions.

There is a $10 application for entry. Be sure to send an inquiry, for an application on the events page. Guest coming to view the homes admission is $3 for Adults and $1 for youth. Guests may enter the Forest multiple times for one admission.

There will be a tea with the Fairy Queen. Ages 3 and up and must sign up day of for the Tea. Charge is $1. Costume contest. A Troll race… Meet the Water Fairy, Fairy Godmother, Tooth Fairy, Tinkerbell and others. Visit the Dust shop to purchase Pixie Dust, Dust Bunnies, and house dust.

Special guest Michelle Dual Wagner of Saratoga Springs, will provide free gallery readings. Guest
Tom Comwell Ufologist ,will present his books and lecture on his findings as a Ufologist. Steve Kulls Squatch Detective, whom has made appearances on National Geographics tv show will present his findings and answer questions. Prepare for his books as well. Jack Kenna Paranormal Investigator and Comic Book Author will also present his findings. He has made many appearances on Haunted Case Files. And finally Stacey Horton Paranormal Investigator will be preset to share her findings and answer questions.

Competitive Co-ed Soccer Ages 15-18

We are trying to put together a co-ed indoor soccer team for ages 15-18. The team would begin playing games at the Crete Center the first week of February and continue through the end of April. They would play one game per week on either Saturday or Sunday. We would like to begin some optional practices before the season begins, and we have to sign our team up with the City of Plattsburgh Rec. Art and Spanish in November (Saranac Lake)

We will be holding 3 classes of Art and Spanish on the first three Thursdays in November at the Saranac Lake Baptist Church 11/3, 11/10, 11/17.

Spanish is taught by certified Spanish teacher, Doug Zobel, and is $30 for the 3-week session for the first child, and $15 for additional siblings for the 3-week session. Spanish will happen from9:30am-10:30am.

Art is taught by Joy Cranker, and we just ask for a few dollars donation to cover the cost of the nice, big, thick paper Joy buys for us each year. Art will be from 10:30am-11:30am.

Homeschool Yoga Classes at Earthshine Yoga in Saranac Lake

We can hold adults-with-kids homeschool yoga classes at Earthshine Yoga in Saranac Lake, if people are interested. They would be fun, informal classes with lots of games to develop strength and flexibility. No prior experience necessary, no special equipment needed. We need at least 6 or more students including adults that want to participate. The charge would be $45 per hour to be shared per person participating. Please let me know if your are interested and I will take this further in scheduling a date if there is interest. Let me know how many kids and adults would like to participate and the ages of the kids.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The LPCA is proud to continue our Weibrecht AfterSchool Workshop Program.

Designed to give kids of all ages hands-on experience in a variety of artistic mediums, the Weibrecht AfterSchool Program pairs some of the area's best local artists with area students to produce some of the most interesting artistic pieces you will see all year.

Covering everything from basket weaving to pottery to juggling, every student is bound to find something that will pique their artistic interest.   

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Students may register for any number of free workshops. Please check your dates carefully and be sure not to double book your child's workshops.

Many classes meet for several days. Students are expected to attend all dates listed for each registered class.

If you cannot attend a class after registering for it, please inform the office at 518.523.2512.  Failure to call prevents another child from having the opportunity to take the class.

All area children are invited to participate!

Please drop off & pick up kids promptly.

Leave your friends at home. We cannot accommodate extra kids in classes.

We ask that parents do not stay in the classroom.  But you are welcome to stay in one of the LPCA's waiting areas.

We spend the morning hearing short oral presentations from the kids who dress up as historic characters or historic things that they researched. We have a potluck lunch and then spend the afternoon doing hands-on, multidisciplinary activities that provide clues leading up to the finding of a treasure.

We will meet at Historic Saranac Lake's (HSL) Historic Saranac Laboratory at 9:30am with kids' presentations starting at 10am. 

We'll have a pot luck lunch together around noon (there is a full kitchen at the lab so bring things that need to be cold or things that need to be warmed up).

After lunch we will walk to the Cure Cottage Museum on Helen Hill with our guide from HSL. It's a short walk. Then we will walk back to our cars at HSL and drive to the Little Red cottage at the Trudeau Institute (maps will be provided) for some more touring.

At each location we have hands-on learning activities for the kids in all subject areas - history, math, physics, biology, art, etc. We should be done by 3pm.

Here's what you have do to prepare for the day:
1. RSVP and let me know you're coming. The cost is $2 per person.
2. Help your child prepare a 5-or-so minute presentation and costume about the thing or person they want to research.
3. Think of what food or drink you'd like to bring to the potluck lunch and offer to bring plasticware, dishes, cups, and napkins if you have them sitting around your house.
4. Once we have our attendance numbers, you can (but aren't required to) buy small "treasure bag" items to put into each child's goodie bag that they take home at the end of the treasure hunt. We do have some teens, so try to think of small items that would be useful for teens and younger kids too.
