Pocomcrady Education Activities and the Crux Climbing on Fridays

The Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center has added on a morning activity on each day that we are meeting at The Crux. Each family should feel free to participate as often as they wish. You can do one afternoon, or one morning, or one full day or you can do every single opportunity or combination. There is no requirement. There is no minimum to how much your family attends. Please just come if and when you are able. Also note that there is an $8 fee, per person for each morning session and a $7 fee per climber for the afternoon sessions. **

Outdoor Education Center morning activities will begin promptly at 10:00am with doors opening at 9:30am. Morning programming runs until noon. Lunch will run from noon to 1:00pm. Lunch is provided. They will take a headcount in the morning and their chef will prepare something for the group. Cost for the morning session and lunch is $8 per person.

Ski swaps and homeschool XC ski days on the horizon

Once winter comes, we will be having weekly homeschool XC Ski days at Mt Van Hoevenberg (MVH) in Lake Placid on Wednesdays from 10am-1pm. MVH hasn't made the sign up form yet on their website, but the plan is to have it cost $50/child for the season, which would include lessons and a pass to allow the child to participate in other community programs too. We're not sure if that price includes rentals yet. Parents who ski with the group should also be able to get a discounted $50 pass, though the details on that are also a bit hazy. BUT, we wanted to share this info now because a whole bunch of ski swaps are coming up in the region, in case you were in the market for equipment. Here are some of them:

Annual Homeschool History Day

Our Annual Homeschool History Day is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22, 2019! 

RSVP with the number of kids you are bringing by email to Sunita at sunitahalasz@gmail.com.

The cost is $5 per family, which gives you admission for the day to the Historic Saranac Lake Laboratory Museum and also serves as a donation to our hosts at the museum who will also be our guides for our afternoon activities.

Morning activities will take place in the John Black Room (basement) of the museum. In addition to the upstairs part of the museum (the laboratory), there is a display called "The Art of the Cure" in the John Black Room, so be sure to take time to look at it!

Please arrive at 9:30am to put your potluck food in the fridge and give your treasure to the treasure bag fillers. The museum has a full kitchen.

Kids' presentations will start at 10am. Then, we will all share a potluck lunch together around noon.

In the afternoon, we will caravan over to the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake to learn about and honor some of fascinating people buried there who influenced local and also world history. We will most likely be done at 2-2:30pm. Here's what you need to do to participate:

1. Please RSVP by October 15, at the latest, so that we have a complete head count for participants to use for treasure contributions.

2. Kids are NOT required to prepare a presentation (because being in the audience is an important role too!), but if they would like to choose a historical person, place, or thing to dress up as and present about for about 5 minutes, it really is a fun way to practice no-pressure public speaking! Parents can feel free to stand up with their kids while they present and help prompt them or act as their interviewer to help them remember the facts they researched.

3. If you are able, please bring a small treasure to put into each child's goody bag that they will get at the end of the day. In the past, people have brought things like pencils, stickers, apples, etc.

4. Please bring a dish to pass. Please let us know if your kids have any allergies we should be aware of.

Fort Ticonderoga Homeschool Day

Spend a day at Fort Ticonderoga and take part in a series of programs designed for homeschool families! While interacting with soldiers, students can ask about life at the 18th-century fort. Step aboard the 1920s replica tour boat, Carillon, for a 75-minute narrated boat tour on Lake Champlain to gain an in-depth waterway experience. Raise your hand in allegiance and enlist in the Continental Army during the immersive “To Act as One United Body” program and practice formation tactics, drills, and marches. Explore a new 2019 design in the six-acre Heroic Maze and answer clues connected to Fort Ticonderoga’s history as you find your way through the maze.

Homeschool Art Show Update

Deadline for submissions is August 31st. 

Art will be on display from Tuesday 9/3/19 through Tuesday 10/1/19. 

Closing reception for artists, families, and friends on Tuesday 10/1/19 from 4-6pm. 

This show is always such a neat display of projects. You can enter anything you have previously created or you can create something in the next couple of weeks. It can be art created in a family setting around your dining room table. It can be art created with others in a co-op or class. Anything! ANY and ALL art is welcome. All homeschoolers are welcome to participate. Public school siblings too! There is no limit to the number of pieces that you submit. 

Hanging art needs to be matted per Becky. This can simply be poster board or large pieces of paper behind the art. It doesn't have to be professionally matted. It does not need to be framed and b/c of the library's setup, and the weight of some of the frames, it is sometimes easier if the pieces are not framed. There are display cases for non hanging pieces.

Each piece of art needs to be tagged with name or initials/age/town.

No Back to School Picnic

The No Back to School Picnic will be at the Adirondack Carousel on Thursday, September 5th at 10 am. It is a chance to connect and share information on homeschooling and the up coming year. Everyone brings their own lunch. There is a play ground, carousel, and things to do which often includes a game of capture the flag.

Meadomount School of Music Summer Performances

For anyone interested in taking in some classical music from budding musicians this summer, consider a visit to Meadowmount School of Music. Regular summer concerts run Wednesdays, Fridays, & Sundays starting at 7:30pm. They have additional special concert offerings. Tickets cost $10.00 for adults / $5.00 for students and senior citizens. Children under 8 are free.

It is an easy drive not far off exit 32 from the Northway Rt 87. The town is listed as Westport but it seems more like Lewis.  Dress is informal and is attended by performers’ fellow students as well as the public. There was no formal announcements, just promptly at 7:30 a student and their accompanists came onto the stage and performed for generally ½ hr. each for a total of one hour. A program did describe the performer’s bio and music.

5th Annual Homeschool Art Show

The Peru Library has once again invited the homeschool community to display their art. We have a tentative showing set for the month of August. I will be sending out other emails with specific dates and details but I wanted to get the word out now. 

All homeschoolers are invited to participate. All mediums included. Multiple pieces may be submitted. Stay tuned for more information! 

Reminder: Homeschool Art Show and Science Fair

The annual Homeschool Art Show and Science Fair is coming up next Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 1-4pm in the basement of the Saranac Lake Free Library.

The Art Show is already up and on display in the room, and at the end of the day on the 28th, we will take it down and you can bring it home.

If you haven't yet, please RSVP for the Science Fair so we can plan for space and other needs you might have (access to electrical outlet, access to the sink, etc.)

Both the Art Show and Science Fair are non-competitive, fun, all-ages events. Even parents are allowed to do projects and display them! If your student doesn't want to do a science fair project and would rather just come and observe, that is totally fine. 

Feel free to bring a healthy snack to share.

We'll start setting up science projects at 12pm, and by 1pm we'll be ready to share with each other and any family, friends, or community members who come by.

Homeschool Camp Cherokee!

Dates: August 18th – 23th, 2019. (Sunday, August 18th (dinner time) through Friday, August 23 (morning)

Location: Camp Cherokee (Lake Saranac: 433 Gilpin Bay)

Cost: For the week will be $493/family (not person) plus a meal for everyone including staff and being a helper at an additional meal.  

          Note: If you are interested in bringing another adult with you for the week (Grandparent), it is an additional $134 and for a child, it is $115.  Foster children are considered family children and included in the price.

 This is my children’s favorite week of the year!

Extra details:

Sunday night’s pot luck dinner or we order pizza (everyone splits the cost); three years ago, we had enough families and Kari supplied Sunday’s meal. In addition, your family will be a helper at another meal. Depending on the number of families, I may ask everyone to contribute something towards a breakfast (box of cereal or gallon of milk) and help cleaning up for one extra meal. In the past, people have been incredibly helpful so clean-up is pretty easy with all the hands at work. As the number of teenagers increases, I will be asking them to help a little extra this year!

Activities (all included in the cost):

Ø  Pool with lifeguard

Ø  Horseback riding

Ø  Archery or Knife throwing

Ø  Ping Pong

Ø  Field – great for baseball, soccer, capture the flag, etc.

Ø  Small Sand Pit (little boys liked it there!)

Ø  Motorboats with almost everything imaginable behind them (staff drives the boats)

Ø  Pontoon boat – love the rides to star watch at night

Ø  Boat Area - includes kayaks, canoes, paddle boats (this is open all day but we need an adult on land and everyone needs to sign the boats out)

Ø  Chapel time

Other things you may want to know --

·         The kitchen is vegetarian; hence no meat – milk, eggs & dairy are fine.

·         You bring your own bedding, towels, etc. (beds and bunks are provide). I’ll let you know what beds/bunks you will have in your room before you go.

·         Every family supplies a meal - so food is mostly covered. You can put the food you bring in the main kitchen where there is a walk-in fridge and area to store food. (You may also want to bring extra snacks for your family in a plastic container if you store where you sleep or you can store anything you want in the kitchen – please label for food if you do not want anyone else using it)

·         Due to allergies, we have only allowed peanut butter in the kitchen and asked that an adult makes the sandwich, then they watch the child while they eat it. Afterward, please wash everyone’s hands. If you have other allergy concerns, or this policy is not acceptable, please notify me and we will work together to ensure everyone is safe!

·         You may want to bring stuff for s’mores – they are a hit on nights we have a campfire!

·         Bring your favorite board game - kids love to play games together on rainy days or in the evening.

·         If you would like to organize a “class” or “meeting”, just let me know and we will add it to our schedule. In the past we have had photography, cake decorating, men prayer time, and homeschool sharing time to give you an idea.

Homeschoolers' Day at the Almanzo Wilder Farm

We’re inviting homeschool families to come for a tour on May 22nd. We're offering two tour times ~ 10-12 and 12:30-2:30. Openings are limited- please pre-register by May 20, so we can plan for tour guides. School tour rates apply for all who pre-register (students, $3.50; adults, $7). Homeschool Ski Program at Titus

It's getting to be that time of year again!  I have received the homeschool skiing forms from Titus Mountain in Malone. This program is for ages 5 and up.  It will last 5 weeks on Friday's 9:30am-4pm starting January 18th and ending February 15th, one make-up will be scheduled for Friday 3/1.  Our passes are not valid during school February vacation, that’s why the make-up is scheduled for Friday 3/1.  Titus will provide 1 hour of lessons each week for each skier (adult or child) of any level with the cost of the lift ticket.

This year pricing is as follows:

Lift, Lesson, & Rentals** $165 (student)/ $315 (adult)

Lift & Lesson  $110 (student)/ $185 (adult)

Lesson & Ski Lesson Rental** $110 (student)/$185 (adult)- This is for season pass holders

Lesson Only $55 (both student & adult)- This is for season pass holders 

**Rentals included boots & skis (or snowboard) but not helmets

Titus asked me to remind parents of proper attire: layers, hat/helmet, mittens/gloves and no jeans. Jeans tend to soak in water making a skier/snowboarder cold and wet

Saranac Lake Homeschool Art Class

I hope everyone had a good summer.  I am trying to schedule Art for Monday mornings at 10.  I would like to have those interested to please sign up with the 1st name and ages of all children so I can finish making plans and ordering supplies.  I will need to have a count by Thursday so I can get my order in on Friday. 

So far I am planning some perspective drawing and painting projects.

I would like to add I am trying to schedule Art from 10 to 11 am on Mondays starting September the 24th.   There will be no class on October 8th, November 12th and the week of Thanksgiving.
