Plattsburgh-The War of 1812 Museum operated by the Battle of Plattsburgh Association will have a day full of events dedicated to raising awareness about Pike’s Cantonment, the historic War of 1812 military camp lead by Zebulon Pike.
In the Winter of 1812, under the leadership of Colonel Zebulon Pike, units of the U.S. Army took up winter quarters and for three months lived near what is now Route #22 in the vicinity of the Plattsburgh International Airport. During these three months, over 200 men perished due to frost bite and severe cold before marching out in early 1813.
Pike’s Cantonment Day will commence at 10:00am on Saturday, December 13th at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association at 31 Washington Road, on the former old base behind the airplanes on Route #9.
Events are as follows…
10:00am: The Battle of Plattsburgh Association (BOPA) will have a flag raising ceremony celebrating the newest addition to the BOPA grounds, a 30 foot flag pole donated by Woodmen of the World and installed by Andrew Rivera and members of the Boy Scouts of America. Installation of the pole was a requirement for the completion of Andrew Rivera’s Eagle Scout project.
11:00am: War of 1812 Soldier demonstrations will be held by local War of 1812 military re-enactors. Soldiers will talk about what life was like as a soldier during the War of 1812 and will be firing off a re-enactor canon and holding musket demonstrations.
12:00pm: Several re-enactors will then go next door to the Old Post cemetery and participate in the annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony held by the American Military Retirees Association (ARMA).
1:00pm: War of 1812 re-enactor boot camp for kids will be held on the BOPA grounds.
2:00pm: Presentation by Keith Herkalo, President of the Battle of Plattsburgh Association and author of “The Battles of Plattsburgh: September 11, 1814” on the history of Pike’s Cantonment.
3:00pm: Brief ending ceremony presented by re-enactors.
For more information, please call Dave Deno at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association at (518) 566-1814 or by e-mail at manager@battleofplattsburgh.org.

Note: Those interested in participating will be emailed a selection of readings a week before class, and students will pick one reading and write an abstract before class. (An abstract is an analysis of the reading - Did the author prove his thesis and support whether or not the author was successful and then conclude your belief. Reading and abstract expectations will be age and level appropriate. It will be an introduction to the 4th grades and a greater expectation for the older students.)
Classes will include artifact analysis, use of maps and primary documents to detect how the early people and the tribes that followed lived, their politics and relations with other tribes and Nations. There will be some role play. Students will break into groups or tribes to make political decisions on trade, treaties and war.

Raise Money for Your Local Library: Participate in Olivia's Challenge
Samantha Marocco's daughter Olivia did a reading challenge last year to raise funds for local libraries. This year she would like to include all the homeschoolers in the area in her challenge! Please read below for all the details. :-)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
How it works is:
Kids: Keep track of how many books you read in the month of November using a reading log. Have your parents and/or grandparents pledge a small donation amount per book. At the end of the month, tally the amount of money earned and donate this amount to your local library! Have fun reading!
If kids read more than 20 books, additional book titles can be written on the back of the sheet and/or additional pages.
Parents and kids give their donation directly to their library of choice. Please email Samantha at smarocco@gmail.com with your total number of books read and donation amount, as last year a newspaper article was written announcing the total number of books read and amount of money earned.
You can include books read with, to, or by the child, as well as books on tape. Videos or movies don't count though. Fiction, non fiction, poetry- it all counts!
Books can be of any length that you decide is appropriate for your child's age and reading ability. You can also do a family challenge and add up the books read by every member of the family or do the challenge as individuals. Just be sure to have fun with books!

Poetry Out Loud
CCC is hosting Poetry Out Loud for the second year in a row and I wanted to make certain that home school students had a chance to participate. Poetry Out Loud is a great way to celebrate poetry and participate in a community event with other students.
Below is the listing that was sent out to area schools. Some of it isn't applicable, but the basic information is there for you and other families to look over. Because of how Poetry Out Loud is already structured, the Poetry Out Loud committee at CCC understands that it presents some barriers to non-traditional students. I'd love to be able to assist in any way possible from doing mini-workshops with interested students to helping set up a selection committee to decide which students will participate in the main competition.
Please let me know if anyone would like to participate in the competition itself or take part in preparatory workshops for the event! I'd love to see more community engagement and participation with this event.

If you have students who love
-- public speaking,
-- poetry,
-- or acting,
this opportunity is too good to pass up.
You may have heard of Poetry Out Loud. It’s a national recitation contest created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. It’s just for high school students.
Here in the North Country, students haven’t had the chance to participate until recently. We had only two high schools involved last year, but for the 2015 competition, we’re getting prepared early, and we hope your students will be excited to enter.
Check out last year’s coverage in the Press Republican http://(http://www.pressrepublican.com/news/local_news/article_4480fef2-b283-5dd2-b3ad-67a89f45ed87.html).
The competition begins at your school, with winners competing at a regional recitation at Clinton Community College. Regional winners go to Albany, and the state winners go to Washington DC.
The Poetry Out Loud organization provides you with everything teachers need to get started!
Registering and participating are free. Go to www.poetryoutloud.org<http://www.poetryoutloud.org> to learn more and www.twc.org/POL<http://www.twc.org/POL> to register.

Co-op is going NUT Free
Attention co-op families!
We have a child with a severe peanut allergy this year & would appreciate it if families did not bring any peanut products or peanut butter sandwiches for potluck OR in any individual lunches eaten in the building.
Several members have sensitivities to other nuts as well, so we are suggesting potluck & bag lunch items just avoid nuts in general if possible, but peanuts are the "biggie".
Suggested substitutions would be Sun Butter or Soy Nut Butter. :-)

Doug Zobel is planning to start up Spanish lessons for homeschoolers, and wonders if we can gauge interest level from our group. It would be one hour, one day a week. If there were a lot of younger kids also interested (preschool age), then he would consider offering a preschool-oriented class. I know I am totally interested with my two kids (He's a great teacher!). He would hold these lessons in a tutoring room located at St. Bernards school in Saranac Lake. Please write back ASAP so we can get this going! Contact information is below.
And, by the way, even if you've already started French or some other language with your kids, it won't hurt them at all to add Spanish into the mix! In fact, in Europe kids learn a whole bunch of languages all at one time.

Historical Adventures for the Whole Family
After last year’s successful Underground Railroad Experience, PMOEC is happy to announce two more historical adventures! Both of these community events will give participants a chance to experience hands-on history guided by Pok-O-MacCready’s instructors and local historians.
On Friday October 17th, we will once again be partnering with The North Country Underground Railroad Museum and the 1812 Homestead to immerse families in the life and times of freedom seekers, abolitionists and bounty hunters in the Champlain Valley. The Museum’s Linda Richardson will also go in depth on some of the more famous North Country abolitionists.
And on Saturday November 1st, for the first time as a community event, we will be presenting our Revolutionary War Simulation. Participants will be transported to 1777, where they will be asked to support either the British or the Patriots. Along the way, they will meet five different historical characters, with five very different views on the war. Our guest presenter, Craig Russell, will also show us how the Champlain Valley influenced the tides of war.
Each event will cost $5 and includes hot beverages and refreshments.
Please RSVP for these events, and if you have any questions, contact me!
