4th annual Food Shelf Garden party

Finally, I have the details… Homeschool Camp located on beautiful Saranac Lake, (at Camp Cherokee - 433 Gilpin Bay) will be Sunday, August 16th through Friday, August 21st(morning). This is my children’s favorite week of the year!
The cost is $463 per family (NOT person) plus you supply a meal for everyone including the staff (we also bring something to share for Sunday night which is a pot luck dinner or we order pizza – this is what we did the last couple of years). In addition, your family will be a helper at another meal. Depending on the number of families, I may ask everyone to contribute something towards a breakfast (box of cereal/drink) and help cleaning up for one extra meal. In the past, people have been incredibly helpful so clean-up is pretty easy with all the hands at work. You bring your own bedding, towels, etc (beds and bunks are provide). I’ll let you know what size & number beds/bunks you will have in your room before you go.
Additional notes: If you’d like another adult with you for the week (Grandparent) it is an additional $118. The cost of an additional child (13 and under) it is $98 for the week. Foster children are considered family children and included in the family price.
Deposit - I am collecting a $100 deposit which is non-refundable to help the camp know the number of families that will be attending so they can determine the required staff. You may mail me your deposit:

Every family supplies a meal - so food is mostly covered. You can put the food you bring in the main kitchen where there is a walk in fridge and area to store food. (You may also want to bring extra snacks for your family in a plastic container if you store where you sleep or you can store anything you want in the kitchen)

Due to allergies, we have only allowed peanut butter in the kitchen and asked that an adult makes the sandwich, then they watch the child while they eat it. Afterwards, please wash everyone’s hands.

Festival of Tibetan Art: Make Mosaic Tiles to be installed in City Hall Place
Participate in the creation of a tile mural that will be installed in downtown Plattsburgh this summer!
Learn how to create handmade tiles using Tibetan motifs. Your tiles will become part of a permanent installation in City Hall Place.
This event is part of the “Festival of Tibetan Arts & Culture of the Adirondack Coast” -- a series of community events illuminating the arts and culture of Tibet in the North Country between April and December 2015 including performances by the Adirondack Youth Orchestra; an exhibition at SUNY Plattsburgh; the creation and installation of a tile mural in downtown Plattsburgh led by the Plattsburgh Renewal Project; and a documentary by Mountain Lake PBS. This festival is funded, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts

North Country Homeschool Co-op 5/20/15
Please come join us at the Wesleyan Church on Rt 3 in the village of Cadyville.
Another school year is coming to a close! Hard to believe, but it's time for co-op's annual End of Year Field Day! The church building will be opened by 10:45am for set-up & access to the kitchen. The bulk of the group planned games & activities will take place between 11a-12p. The church building will be locked at 2:00pm, however families are welcome to stay later to play next door at the park.
All families who have attended co-op this year, or are interested in checking co-op out for next year, are invited to attend. Weather permitting, games & outside play time will be held at the old Cadyville Elementary School building, playground & fields on Rt 3, immediately next door to the Wesleyan Church. The church building will be open & available to the group in case of poor weather, and to use the kitchen & bathroom facilities.
Families should plan to bring an item to contribute to the potluck lunch or pack a picnic lunch for their family. Please bring your favorite outside toy or idea for a game. A large parachute & rope for tug-of-war will be available. Additional game/toy ideas could include:
~ balls -- basketball, soccer, kickball, etc
~ jump ropes
~ hula hoops
~ bubble solution & wands
~ sidewalk chalk
~ pillow cases or other sacks for sack races
~ lead a group game like egg balancing, 3 legged races, etc
~ simple craft projects that could be done outdoors
In the event of rain, co-op will still meet. Families will have the chance to visit & play games inside, preschool toys, and simple arts & crafts activities will be set up for the students as well. If the weather is poor, please bring your favorite board game to share!

Additionally, a schedule with the 2015-2016 co-op class meeting dates, as well as a sign-up form for teaching next year, will be available on the sign-in table at this session. We would like to have the full 2015-2016 co-op schedule made up before August 1st to help families with planning their upcoming school year & give members maximum time to prep for teaching their classes. Please bring an idea (or two!) for a class -- remember, each family teaching or arranging an outside teacher 1-2 times per year is a part of your co-op membership!

Do you like to build and fix things, take pictures, journal, sketch, history, or biology? We are seeking candidates with interests in science and exploration to join the CREW (Champlain Research and Exploration in Water) where we will explore the depths of Lake Champlain with Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV’s) built during a series of summer workshops.
Lake Champlain is rich in natural and cultural resources. Stretching 120 miles and linking the Richelieu and St Lawrence rivers to the Hudson, Champlain was the most important passage for commerce and travel during America’s colonial era into the first half century of the United States. Control of the lake was vital to the formation of United States and she played a pivotal role in the French and Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Beneath her waters lies historical record of human progress from early Native American settlements through present day. The waters of the lake provide a drinking source for nearly 200,000 people along her shores and habitat for countless species of fish and wildlife. Champlain supports a vibrant tourism industry for fishing, hunting, swimming, and boating. Postindustrial settlement along the lake and surrounding valley during the 20th century however, has born challenges to the lakes delicate ecosystem which threaten the quality of the fresh water that has both preserved antiquity and served the livelihood of man and wildlife. Our mission will be threefold: to find and document the cultural artifacts before they are lost to invasive species of mussels, to work with watershed groups to help preserve the ecology of the lake, and to learn about the science and technologies we can use to build the tools we will need to accomplish our missions.
We plan to build two ROV’s, one powered from the surface designed using basic electronic circuitry and a second powered internally using micro-computers. Both ROV’s will be outfitted with underwater cameras. We will break up the builds into functional groups consisting of 3-5 member teams, with team leaders chosen based on knowledge and skill level. Participants will learn about basic electronic circuits, soldering, Archimedes’ principle, propulsion, challenges involved in underwater design, acrylic welding, and an overview of microprocessors, software programming and the pros and cons between the two ROV designs. After building the ROV’s, we will train off the docks to build piloting and tether management skills then coordinate dive missions. During the workshop, we will also discuss the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) and the SeaPerch underwater robotics programs and competitions. If there is interest, we can explore the possibilities of future missions and/or developing teams for MATE and SeaPerch competition.
The workshops will be held lakeside in Willsboro. Space is limited, so interested participants should register early. Older children are encouraged to share your interests in the RSVP to help me find the right team to start you on and the direction of our initial missions. Participants should be at least seven years or older although younger children are welcome with parent participation. Sessions will run for 2 hours with swim time and water fun after some serious learning.

Saranac Lake Homeschoolers Invite Homeschoolers to Participate in Science and Art Show
The annual Homeschool Science Fair will take place on June 18 from 2-4pm in the Cantwell Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library. We will start setting up at 1pm and clean up at 4pm.
