The North Country Homeschooling group seeks to provide homeschooling support and activities to those living in the Northern NY counties of Clinton, Essex, and Franklin. Activity information is available via email, blog, and Facebook. Homeschooling support is provided though Facebook and a variety of monthly support groups. The North Country Homeschooling Group is open to anyone who homeschools or who is thinking of homeschooling. There are no membership fees.

Passport to Learning: Shelburne Museum VT

Shelburne Museum Passport to Learning---Homeschool day is Oct. 6

Passport to Learning is an exciting series of ten interactive workshops for students in grades K-8 that meet educational standards from Vermont’s Framework of Standards and Grade Expectations/Common Core State Standards and introduces students to concepts and themes in art, language arts, math, science, and social studies through a facilitated exploration of Shelburne Museum.

Workshops run concurrently from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The last workshop session of the day begins at 1:30 p.m.
Workshops begin promptly on the half hour.
Each workshop closes for a 30-minute break during the day.
Workshops run on a first-come, first-served basis.
Workshops can accommodate between 10 and 20 students at a time. We encourage classrooms to divide into small groups of 4 to 6 students each, with at least one chaperone per group.
You may choose to complete as few or as many workshops as you would like. We recommend that students in grades K-2 attend 2-3 workshops and students in grades 3-8 attend 3-5 workshops in a visit.
Every student receives a passport upon arrival. At the completion of a workshop each student receives a stamp in his or her passport.
Every student receives a pass to return to the Museum for free with one paid adult.

The admission for Passport to Learning and Small Group Days is $5 per student and $5 per chaperone. School staff or one parent per home-schooled family are admitted free.Please note that if you are a home-school family arriving before 10 a.m., you must pay with cash or a check.

Fall Foliage Adirondack Scenic Railroad--October 8

We have a Fall Foliage Adirondack Scenic Railroad trip scheduled for October 8 at 10:30 am out of the Lake Placid station. The train travels to Saranac Lake, where there will be an hour and a half layover, then back to Lake Placid via the 1 pm train. If you would like more time in Saranac Lake to explore the carousel, Stevenson home, etc, you can opt to take the 3:45 train back.

We will meet at the station at 9:45 to purchase our tickets and get situated.

You're welcome to bring food on the train.

If we have at least 25 people we get the group discount rates. $15.00 for an adult ticket, $13 for seniors, and $8.00 for youth (ages 2-12).

Homeschool Music Program

My name is Saundra Stortz, and I have just retired as the music specialist at Seton Academy in Plattsburgh. I previously taught at what was St.Peter's Elementary school, for a total of 16 continuous years between the two schools. I am certified in the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music and movement education.

This fall, I am starting a program of music classes targeted at home-schooled students. Lessons would include instruction in instrument playing (recorder, drums, xylophones), singing, movement. Everything you would expect, however, the Orff approach goes beyond rote learning to encourage other life skills like creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Classes are grouped into 10 week Sessions with a one-hour lesson each week. Three Sessions are planned for the 2014-2015 school year. It is hoped that the students will continue from Session One to Session Two and on to Session Three to complete the year. Each Session will have new material.

If you are not familiar with Orff-Schulwerk, you will be amazed by the 2-minute video prepared by the national Orff Association that shows children experiencing the joy of working together to make music. You can view the video at aosa.org.Click the play button in the lime green strip.

Initial plans are for grouping ages 6-8 and ages 9-12 into multi-aged classes.

holding a fundraiser for their new museum on Sat May 10 from 10-2 at the Farmers Market in Plattsburgh.

Homeschool Co-op Schedule for April 30, 2014

Please come join us at the Wesleyan Church on Rt 3 in the village of Cadyville.

Set-up for those teaching will begin at 10:30am. Also, teachers, please remember to bring an envelope marked with your class name, fee, and some change to place on the sign-in table!

Classes start at 11:00am, and conclude around 3:30p when French classes finish. Feel free to come for the whole time or just for the portion your family wants to participate in. If the weather is fair please bring winter clothing for your kids so they can play outside at the playground next door too!

Community Service Activities for April:
We will continue collecting items for local animal shelters, and are working on arranging a field trip once the weather is warmer to the Elmore SPCA. Biology Dissection

This is the fourth in a series of 5 dissection classes, which will be held on 3/19, 4/2, 4/16, 4/30 & 5/7. For this class students will be dissecting the cray fish specimen. Parents please make sure your students have taken a moment to review any documents or videos you receive via email prior to the class date.

Classes will focus on students learning about the various body systems through the dissection & observation process. For this class, older students will meet in Classroom #3. Please bring safety goggles & a smock/apron (or wear old clothing).

Board games for the preschool & elementary age children will be set up in the preschool room downstairs. There will also be building blocks, basic art supplies, and other items to help keep our youngest co-op members entertained throughout the afternoon.

Board games for older kids (ages 9+) will be set up in the board room for the afternoon. Bring your favorite game to share!   There will also be a Capsella Science kit set-up in the older kid board room for them to work on throughout the afternoon.

Final Class this spring semester!    There will be two 45 min classes offered classes offered. One from 2:00 - 2:45 for younger kids (ages 5-8), and one from 2:45-3:30 for older kids (ages 9+). All classes will be offered at the beginner level, but two classes will allow Carole to offer more advanced projects for the older kids and keep a good student/teacher ratio.

The rate is $10 per lessons. She is willing to do a multiple child rate of 50% for second child. (If there's more in your family you can discuss with her.)

Homeschool Summer Camp, Camp Cherokee

Homeschool Summer Camp, Camp Cherokee -- 8/17-8/22

Homeschool Camp will be Sunday, August 17th through Friday, August 22nd (morning), at Camp Cherokee (433 Gilpin Bay). Families who attend absolutely love this camp located on beautiful Lake Saranac.
The cost is $453 per family (NOT person) plus you supply a meal for everyone including the staff (we also bring something to share for Sunday night which is a pot luck dinner or we order pizza – this is what we did the last couple of years). In addition, your family will be a helper at another meal. Depending on the number of families, everyone may be asked to contribute something towards a breakfast (box of cereal/drink) and help cleaning up for one breakfast. In the past, people have been incredibly helpful, so clean-up is pretty easy with all the hands at work. Additional notes: If you’d like another adult with you for the week (grandparent, etc) it is an additional $115. The cost of an additional child, not part of your immediate family (13 and under) it is $95 for the week. Foster children are considered the family's children and included in the family price.

Deposit:
Tammy Neureuther is the coordinator for homeschool camp at Camp Cherokee. She will be collecting a $100 deposit which is non-refundable to help the camp know the number of families that will be attending so they can determine the required staff. If we let them know early enough, and the group is large enough, they will be able to provide extra staff to help our group.

~ Chapel time (my children love the songs)

~ Mom's homeschool sharing time -- bring your favorite idea, game, product, etc to share (we have not done this the last couple of years… but could if anyone wanted)

~ Talent night

~ Lots of games semi-organized games - volley ball, kickball, soccer and capture the flag were a hit in the past. We also played quite a few board games especially when it rains. I suggest you bring your favorite!
~ "Spooky" stories by the campfire for the older kids

Other things you may want to know:

~ The kitchen is vegetarian; hence no meat – milk, dairy & eggs are fine. We have children attending with peanut allergies & have modified the kitchen routine accordingly.

~ You bring your own bedding, towels, etc (beds and bunks are provide). Tammy will let you know what beds/bunks you will have in your room before you go.

~ Every family supplies a meal - so food is mostly covered. You can put the food you bring in the main kitchen where there is a walk in fridge and area to store food. (You may also want to bring extra snacks for your family in a plastic container if you store where you sleep or you can store anything you want in the kitchen)

Kids will find their very own star power in this terrific theater camp. The group will explore many aspects of putting on a show including staging, character development, singing, choreography, costume construction, and set design concluding with a 15-20 minute production on the final day of camp.

Camp Rock - Finding Your Voice with Kim WeemsSession I or 2; Ages 8-13Students explore vocal performance of popular music. The workshop centers around developing each student as a singer and performer and culminates with a 15 minute performance during which all students are featured as soloists. Learn vocal technique, choreography, works with microphones, stage presence, expression and energy. The main point si to have fun singing songs you may never get to sing in structured music programs at school.

Away with Clay with Brooke NobleSession I or 2; Ages 8-13 Clay may come from the earth, but the sky's the limit in this fun-filled workshop! Several techniques for construction will be explored and campers will leave with at least 3 finished projects. Clay has the incredible ability to transform from a lump of earth to functional vessels, tiles, masks, boxes, sculptures, coil pots and more - there is no limit to the mess of fun kids will have. After the projects have been fired, we will have a glaze day and students will use an array of bright, beautiful glazes to further enhance their newly created masterpieces.

Comic Book Creators with Vicki CelesteSession I; Ages 7-12Fly high in the sky and leap tall buildings in a single bound! Learn how to create your own comic characters and develop those characters into a piece of comic art. Come with an idea for a comic book or create one during th eweek. This is one super class that will have everyone feeling like a hero.

Slapstick Science at PSU

Dr. Quinton Quark Presents his favorite show... “Much Work with Little Effort”, the all-time favorite science presentation where kids learn that with physics, they can do anything! Hoisting 200 pounds (like their teacher) over their heads, lifting 1000 pounds of classmates, or throwing the portly Dr. Quark 8 feet high is simply a matter of understanding Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, Friction, and Simple Machines (pulleys, levers, and screws are demonstrat-ed).

This meeting will be for discussing upcoming classes, co-op policies & coordinator positions.

We will be meeting at the Cadyville Wesleyan Church in order to accommodate those families who can't find child care during weekend or evening hours. There will NOT be classes held during this meeting time, but the children will have a safe place to play while the adults meet to discuss plans.

Homeschool Swim Tuesday March 25

There will be another homeschool swim time at the Comfort Inn this month from 12:30p - 2:30p this Tuesday, 3/25/14.

Please note that the cost per child has increased by $1 due to the Comfort Inn's staffing situation (regular price for open swim is normally $10 per child, so still a great deal by comparison!).

Make sure to bring $4.00 per child to swim from this point on!
