Adirondack Woodwinds Ensemble
SUNY Plattsburgh Music Department presents AWE's annual concert honoring the late Eleanor Marcus, percussionist.
January 31, 2015, 4pm , Saturday at E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium.
February 1, 2015, Lake Placid Center for the Arts
Tickets $10 at the door only. Cash or check only.
Students FREE.
The Adirondack Wind Ensemble (AWE), under the direction of Daniel Gordon, will perform its annual winter concert on Saturday, January 31 at 4:00 pm at E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Tickets are $10 general admission. All students are free.
The program, entitled "Honoring Eleanor Marcus," celebrates the ensemble's recent endowment by the family of Eleanor Marcus, a longtime Plattsburgh resident who attended almost every music event at E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium for decades until her passing in 2013. Because Ms. Marcus was an avocational percussionist throughout her life, the program will consist entirely of works that make prominent use of percussion, including a concerto by Gary Ziek for multiple percussion and winds. The soloist will be Daryle Redmond, a music teacher in the Plattsburgh City School district. Also on the program is the premiere of Colorado composer Joseph Lukasik's The Trouble with Memory, commissioned by AWE for the occasion with funds from the Eleanor Marcus Endowment. Bernard Rands' Ceremonial and John Barnes Chance's Variations on a Korean Folk Song round out the program.
The Adirondack Wind Ensemble is a professional musical ensemble of wind and percussion instruments. Its performers consist primarily of music educators from around the North Country. The group is dedicated to presenting concert performances by members of this community for this community.
These concerts are made possible with funds from the Plattsburgh College Foundation Eleanor Marcus Music Endowment; the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, with support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts; the SUNY Plattsburgh Student Association through the Campus Arts Council and the Music Department; and a College Auxiliary Services grant, the SUNY Plattsburgh President's Office, Alumni Association, and Fitness Center.

Co-op Note for Jan 21
Families attending the Homeschool Co-op's tracking class tomorrow, 1/21/15, please note that the class will now be held at our regular meeting spot, the Cadyville Wesleyan Church on Rt 3. Due to the very cold weather predicted fortomorrow Mike Burgess has decided to relocate to the church building. There will be a talk about animal tracking, followed by a shorter time outside, in the field adjacent to the church, where the students can look for tracks.
Boy Soloist Needed
Dear homeschooling families,
I'm back in touch this spring, after our Amahl and the Night Visitors project of last November.
This semester I am preparing a performance of Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Performance date is tentatively set for April 25.
I have performed this work with my choirs several times over the years. It calls for a boy (that is, an unchanged voice) for the solo part in Movement II. And I have always enjoyed the process of selecting and preparing the soloist, who comes from the community. It's a wonderful experience to showcase some of our young talent.
So today I'm just putting out some feelers to see if any of you have a boy soloist who might be a good candidate for the solo in the 2nd movement. I am listening to prospective soloists this week and next week. The singer does not need to prepare anything. I will want to plan on spending perhaps 30 minutes with him, so I can take some time to get to know his voice (range, quality, aural acuity) and see if this solo is a good fit for him.
Here's a link to a good recording, with Leonard Bernstein conducting. Do note that I am not looking specifically for a straight tone from the soloist. And, of course, I would very much enjoy preparing the singer myself throughout the semester. We would arrange times that worked with both our schedules.
You'll note that the work is sung in Hebrew--and this link also has the translations of the various Psalms that Bernstein selected. The boy solo in Movtement II is the 23rd Psalm.
Please pass the word and ask interested parents get in touch with me with any further questions or to arrange a time for me to meet with them. Some singers are coming here to campus and I am meeting some at their home or school, depending on what works with our schedules.
While our meeting (about 45 minutes) would be an audition, I don't want it to be a daunting one . . . I will have the singer do some simple vocal exercises and some pitch games.
Thanks for considering!
Best,
Jo El

Creating First Person Interpretations
History Class for 5th and above -- class dates -- 1/21, 2/18, 3/4, 3/18
Students will choose a time period, and person to interpret. It could be an actual person or a soldier, Native American, doctor, a young person from a period in time, etc.We will use the internet to browse historic newspapers, contact museum and library archives, look for histories to assist developing an accurate historic presentation.
As an example how I have used this in the past… I was paid by a historical society to research an actual person and I created a one woman show for a historic tea they had. At historic houses I created specialized tours around holidays researching what was going on in the town one hundred years earlier and incorporating it into the tour. You can create a special tour using journals and letters to enhance a special day or event. Reenactors research what the life of a soldier, Native American, etc. What their average day was like, what they were paid, what they ate, etc.
We will work together developing your character or historic persona and then video your presentation. We can discuss how you would like your presentation video done. If you are able to do it at home, at a historic house, etc. and present it to the class that would be fine. Those interested, please email Jan a person, idea or time period you are interest in so she can have some information ready first class. If you have any questions and to register, please email Jan at jemick39@yahoo.com
12:00p - 1:00p

***Please remember that co-op as a new nut free policy! This includes not only items brought for potluck, but also for holiday treats, snacks & bag lunches. If you are looking for a nut butter alternative, sun butter is OK to use! ***

Peru Library Homeschool Art Show
The Peru Library Homeschool Art Show has been rescheduled for this summer. Exact dates to be determined. The library is doing some remodeling work and our original month of March is no longer available. This is the library's 100th birthday so the librarian has some fun things planned. Typically, the library does not exhibit anyone's artwork during the summer months and she would love to have us on display with the extra events planned.
May I have a head count for those families comitting to participate? Would each family drop me a line ASAP with an estimated artwork count that you hope to submit for your family? Typically, co-op, art classes, 4H, meetings etc... will be winding down as we enter the summer months. If art projects have not been completed ahead of time with said classes, each individual family is encouraged to still get their creativity on.
Art may be completed in a class setting or individually. This is open to all families receiving this email. Multiple pieces may be submitted. Hanging art needs to be matted. You can do the matting yourself. Does not need to be fancy, professional, expensive. Art does not need to be framed. Art does not need to be something created within the next couple of months. It may be an older piece you love. All art needs to be tagged with name (first name, last name OR initial), age, town.
Art can be anything! Any medium. Some suggestions I have received are summer themes and artwork depicting your homes.
The librarian would like to hold a reception.
Please email me ASAP at pyrz51@frontier.com if your family would like to participate. Any questions... just let me know. Thanks very much!!
